God's fool (1892) is a novel by Maarten Maartens, set in a fictional Dutch town. The novel's 'hero', Elias Lossell, becomes deaf and blind from an accident when he is nine years old. The people around him can communicate with him by writing letters with a finger on the palm of his hand. Although communication is possible, mentally he always remains a boy of nine. Thanks to a somewhat thoughtless testament Elias becomes the rightful owner of a tea-merchant firm. His half-brothers, the twins Hendrik and Hubert, manage the firm on his behalf. Elias lives in a house of his own at the outskirts of the town, looked after by his old nurse, and occupies himself by growing flowers and helping the needy. A quarrel between the twins in Elias's house escalates into a murder, and the novel has an open ending after a twist. The title is based on 1 Corinthians 3:19: 'For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.' Elias Lossell, the principal person, may be a fool, but he has God's wisdom.Show book
Orson Welles was an actor, director, writer and producer who worked in theatre, radio, TV and film. His film Citizen Kane (1941) is ranked as one of the greatest movies ever made.In 1937, Orson Welles and John Houseman founded the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory theatre company that presented a series of productions (including Julius Caesar) on Broadway through 1941. To help earn money to stage his productions, Welles moonlighted as a radio actor. In 1937, at age 22, he clouded men's minds as radio's first Lamont Cranston, alias The Shadow. In his own radio series, The Mercury Theatre on the Air, Welles dramatized the H.G. Wells science-fiction classic The War of the Worlds and caused widespread panic when listeners thought that Earth was being invaded by Martians.This broadcast earned Orson Welles great notoriety and a film contract with RKO. He followed up Citizen Kane with 12 other feature films, the most acclaimed being The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Touch of Evil (1958) and Chimes of Midnight (1966). Even though Welles stayed quite busy acting and producing films, he found time to appear in many radio shows during the 1940s and 1950s.
