Sinopse

Poetry is a fascinating use of language. With almost a million words at its command it is not surprising that these Isles have produced some of the most beautiful, moving and descriptive verse through the centuries. In this series we look at each calendar month through the eyes and minds of our most gifted poets to bring you a guide to the days within each. This volume of Poetry is all about April - the fourth month of the year in our Gregorian calendar heralding Spring in earnest and of course April Showers and perhaps other unsettled weather. For our poets including Wilfred Owen, Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry Alford, Robert Browning, Henry Van Dyke, Percy Byssche Shelley and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow the month provides a rich source for them to muse upon. Many of the poems are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Portable Poetry. Many samples are at our youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/PortablePoetry?feature=mhee The full volume can be purchased from iTunes, Amazon and other digital stores. Among the readers are Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe

Samuel Beckett, one of the great avant-garde Irish dramatists and writers of the second half of the twentieth century, was born on 13 April 1906. He died in 1989. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. His centenary will be celebrated throughout 2006 with performances of his major plays, but the most popular of them all will be, without doubt, the play with which he first made his name, Waiting for Godot. It opened the gates to the theatre of the absurd as four men appear on the stage, apparently with purpose but (perhaps) waiting for someone called Godot. It is stark, funny, bemusing and still deeply affecting half a century since its first production. In this new recording for audiobook, John Tydeman, for many years head of BBC Radio Drama, takes a fresh look at one of the milestones in Western drama. It follows the highly acclaimed recordings of Beckett’s Trilogy, Molloy, Malone Dies and The Unnamable published by Naxos AudioBooks.

'History is not the study of facts. It is the study of ourselves. Of our stories. The stories we tell each other.'
Nicholas Marks, an aspiring academic from Yorkshire, arrives on the Greek island of Tinos to interview reclusive scientist Daniel Howarth about his work on the atomic bomb. But as he tries to tease apart fact and fantasy, science and mythology, chance and destiny, Nicholas discovers a far more surprising truth about himself.
Robert Holman's play The Overgrown Path is about history, and the stories we tell each other to make sense of ourselves. It was first performed at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in May 1985.

Many of them are familiar and an important part of the annual celebrations, yet there is also a need for new material to offer new insights into the familiar story.

In this book Kevin Carey has combined his four earlier volumes of illustrated Christmas poetry with a new selection of poems and songs for all who are looking for new inspiration at Christmas time and beyond.

    Mike Kenny's imaginative stage adaptation of E. Nesbit's much-loved children's classic.
Famously filmed, this story of a prosperous Edwardian family - mother and three children - forced into near-penury in the rural north of England captures the anxieties and exhilarations of childhood with great tenderness and insight.
As Mike Kenny says of his remarkably faithful adaptation, 'You don't need a real train to perform this play' the most powerful prop is the imagination of the audience, the most effective tool the skill of the actors.' So this version of The Railway Children, which offers three plum roles for young performers, is eminently suitable for schools, youth theatres and drama groups - anywhere, in fact, where the cry of 'Daddy! My Daddy!' is likely to provoke a tear.
'Lavish, warm-hearted... one of the very finest children's stories of the 20th century, and it is served superbly by Mike Kenny's adaptation'- Whatsonstage.com
'This glorious adaptation... profoundly moving... it never for a moment runs out of steam'- Guardian
'Mike Kenny's script provides everything needed for a cracking evening at the theatre.'- Amateur Stage
'Mike Kenny's adaptation shows his mastery of playwriting for children and families... adults and children alike are enthralled by the clever mix of imagination and reality'- Financial Times
