Sinopse

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Edith Wharton, the feminism of a Pulitzer Prize winner

First published in 1900, "The Touchstone" was American writer Edith Wharton’s first novella and also the first of her many stories describing life in old New York.

"The Touchstone" already shows off the skills Wharton became famous for in novels such as "The House of Mirth" (1905) and "Ethan Frome" (1911), particularly her piercing and delicious talent for satiric observation. But despite its masterly control, this startlingly modern tale is also a simmering, rebel cri de coeur unleashed by a writer who was herself unappreciated in her own time. The combination of these attributes make this edgy novella a moving and suspenseful homage to the power of literature itself.

The basic requirements of the novella form are that it should be short, concentrated, centred on a single theme, with few characters, and tightly focused in terms of time scale, characters, and location. "The Touchstone" fulfils all these requirements.

“The Touchstone” tells the story of Stephen Glennard, a man who finds himself suddenly impoverished and unable to marry the woman he loves. He decides to sell the private letters a former admirer had written to him, before she had become a famous author. He is later overcome by guilt for betraying one who had loved him.

It's Halloween at the Baker Valley Barkery and Cafe, which means it's time for a pet costume parade. And when Maggie leaves Sam and Jack in charge of finding contestants the results are definitely...interesting.Note that this is NOT a mystery but does include the characters from the Maggie May and Miss Fancypants Mysteries series and falls chronologically after book four in that series, A Missing Mom and Mutt Munchies. It can, however, also be read as a standalone short story.

Stars—they’re just like us! Except much, much worse.

Rose Aslani is mid-bikini wax when her phone lights up with a notification: Famed scam artist Poppy Hastings will be released from prison today.

It’s been two years since Rose—a first-generation Middle Eastern American, functional trainwreck, and reporter for online journal The Shred—wrote the investigative article that exposed Poppy as a socialite grifter. Normally, one of her articles going viral would be cause for celebration, but the highly publicized trial that followed turned Poppy into the internet’s favorite celebrity. And Rose has been reeling from the aftermath ever since. Although Poppy served her time for defrauding some of the richest, most powerful men in the world, Rose knows this is only the tip of the iceberg for Poppy’s crimes. She just can’t prove it yet … At least not without the help of a devilishly handsome FBI agent gone rogue.

As Poppy’s star rises as an influencer and pop-culture icon, Rose quickly descends into a downward spiral of guilt and obsession. Her article created Poppy’s fame, so Rose needs to right her wrong by exposing Poppy for the monster that she is. But it’s not going to be easy taking down the most famous girl in the world.

Campy, satirical, and utterly hilarious, The Most Famous Girl in the World is both a scathing indictment of modern celebrity and a thrilling roller-coaster ride of unhinged hijinks that will keep you gasping at every turn of the page.

“A gripping satire of our society’s obsession with fame.”—KJ Micciche, author of The Book Proposal

A satirical SF caper of evolution, gangsters, Darwin’s brain, and the Golden Age of Hollywood from the Nebula and World Fantasy Award–winning author. When Sonya Orlova, a successful 1930s horror-film actress, crosses paths with a gorilla whose brain has been swapped for the frozen cerebrum of the late Charles Darwin, the two are inspired to write and produce evolution-themed monster movies—with Sonya in her greatest role, Korgora the Ape Woman! As this offbeat and controversial Hollywood series finds a devoted cult audience, Sonia’s relationship with her strange simian collaborator acquires an intensity neither could have imagined. Then disaster strikes, as zealous opponents to Darwin’s ideas contrive to put the Ape Woman out of business. By turns satiric and romantic, madcap, and thoughtful, Behold the Ape is at once an outré love story, a tribute to classic monster movies, and a science-fictional celebration of that beleaguered institution we call public education.
