Summary

cage | stage - Volume II, 29 chinchillas – a title born from a trip to an exotic animal farm, takes the reader in a second story-orbit around the author's 'little universe', promising flowing, clear, plain speech poetry.
Schmidt expresses his sensibility through conversational, straight-talking free verse. He has been dubbed a 'universal paterjester', whatever that means.
His voice rings familiar, in whimsical, ironic tones, as he further explores his love of
the embrace of opposites
being in-between
humour in dark places
word play all day
and so on.
Dancing between his telescope and microscope, he embraces the magnitude of his dreams and the realities of every day. An observing, external voice regularly intervenes to help the poet achieve this feat.
When the author becomes trapped in a navel-gazing bubble, a trickster appears with stars in his teeth and a needle in his hand.
Mundane magic of kitchen lights. Fearful fun of daily creativity, with children. Morning walks and the neighbourhood's bird man. Holiday photographs and data dilemmas. On living with wild energy. Blowing bubbles with a 3-year-old. Contemplating a creative behind the big story – facing limitations. Diversity within national identity. The fear of seekers finding masters.
Enjoy another lucky packet filled with poetic surprise.
Available since: 01/26/2017.

    Rhinoceros and Other Plays

“With outrageous comedy” this classic of Absurdist drama “attacks the most serious subjects: blind conformity and totalitarianism, despair and death” (The New York Times).

In Rhinoceros, as in his other plays, Eugene Ionesco startles audiences with a world that invariably erupts in explosive laughter and nightmare anxiety. A rhinoceros suddenly appears in a small town, tramping through its peaceful streets. Soon there are two, then three, until the “movement” is universal. This is not an invasion of wild animals, but a transformation of average citizens into beasts, as they learn to move with the times. As the curtain comes down, only one desperate man remains.

Rhinoceros is a commentary on the absurdity of the human condition made tolerable only by self-delusion. It shows us the struggle of the individual to maintain integrity and identity in a world where all others have succumbed to the “beauty” of brute force and mindlessness.

Published to commemorate the author’s 100th birthday, this wide-ranging and thoughtful collection reflects on history, colonisation, family, childhood, Aboriginal Dreaming, traditions and storytelling, working lives and people.
Sometimes wistful, melancholic, poignant, at times the author’s wry sense of fun and humour shines through.
When he arrived in Sydney in the 1960s, Bigambul man, Uncle Wes, was not allowed to tell his stories at schools. He set up a fire bucket in his backyard and invited families and children from the local Aboriginal community to come to sit around the fire and share his stories. It did not take long for the police to arrive and arrest him for hosting an unlawful gathering – he spent two days in lock-up for sharing his stories.
Uncle Wes is a living treasure of Aboriginal storytelling wisdom. Through his poems Uncle Wes invites the reader to join him by the fire as he generously shares his reflections and reminiscences on one hundred years.
'It is my pleasure to honour Uncle Wes for his work in retaining the age-old storytelling tradition of our people. It is important to maintain this tradition of our Elders sharing their knowledge and insight through story and verse. Thank you Uncle Wes, for sharing your poems with us as you celebrate your 100th year.' - Dr Anne Pattel-Gray: Head of the Australia First Nations Program, World Vision Australia
'Uncle Wes Marne has a unique ability to allow the reader to see through his experienced eyes. The power and wisdom of his words is now more than ever important for the future generations to understand the time and place they exist in.' - Ben Bowen: CEO, Indigenous Literacy Foundation

Years and years ago, Hope disappeared. Now, she's back. To find something she left behind.
But in the People's Republic of Koka Kola – a world of dwindling resources, corruption and corporate giants – what happens to Hope?
A surreal and frenetic quest through a hyper-capitalist country, Tom Fowler's play Hope has a Happy Meal premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in June 2023, directed by Lucy Morrison, in a co-production with SISTER.
'A theatrical spectacle… Fowler's writing zips off the page' - WhatsOnStage
'A poignant, offbeat satire that unfolds with the daft, disjointed logic of a dream, full of sudden, unlikely plot twists and surreal asides' - The Stage
'Tom Fowler is a writer with a knack for comedy… Hope Has a Happy Meal is part Thelma and Louise, part reverse-Wizard of Oz, balancing wit and nightmares' - Guardian
