Sinossi

The roar of the rotten husk echoed throughout the hills, eyes gone wide and mouths baring their rotting human-like teeth. The white fox squeaked in terror and alarm, her hind paws moving on their own in some attempt to get herself out of harm's way however she slipped on an uprooted rock and went tumbling to the ground.
He might have the advantage for now, but she won't allow someone so rotted to win over her village and her life.

Going to the chapel and we’re gonna get … haunted?

I’ve got a ring on my finger and a date circled on the calendar, let the wedding planning begin! As luck would have it, the little wooded chapel I’ve got my heart set on, is plagued by the not-so-nice spirit of a former bride.

She died on what was meant to be her wedding day and isn’t going to step aside to let anyone else take her place at the altar. She claims the chapel is cursed and points to her own murder as a sure sign, but I’m not convinced.

I’ll have to keep my new reaper powers in check and solve this case the old-fashioned way if Lucas and I have any shot at starting our happily ever after underneath the majestic pines.

Although written from a child's perspective, this is not a kids book but a series of funny, poignant, and sometimes disturbing stories about life in a late 19th-century Russian-Jewish village -- the world of my grandparents. Sholem Rabinovich (1859-1916) was born in Pereiaslav, Ukraine and later immigrated to New York. His short stories about Tevye and his daughters were freely adapted into the musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Rabinovich's will contained the following injunction: "Let my name be recalled with laughter or not at all." His translator, Hannah Berman, was Irish of Lithuanian descent. Some of these stories may be too intense for younger children. (summary by Adrian Praetzellis)

What was the ultimate fate of Harley Warren?
What inspired the vile paintings of Richard Upton Pickman?
Why was the abandoned house on Benefit Street left to rot?
Though Lovecraft was chiefly known for his Cthulhu Mythos stories, he penned many other tales that explore equally terrifying concepts, many involving strange, subterranean spaces, peopled by ghastly and otherworldly beings.
Nine of these tales of the underground are collected here, in THE HORROR THAT LURKS BENEATH.
The collection includes two dramatic readings: PICKMAN'S MODEL and DAGON.

Some secrets are etched deeper than memory—they are drawn in the very roots of the earth.
Desmond Everett has spent his life running. A traveling preservationist, he catalogs the fading folk practices of a dying world, building a fortress of academic data to shield himself from his own agonizing loneliness. But when a snapped wagon axle strands him in the frozen, isolated village of Thornwich, his perfectly structured isolation begins to crack.
Thornwich sits on the edge of the Understory, a terrifying and majestic sentient forest where massive trees grow in reverse. Their subterranean canopies emit a thick, pulsing amber light that warms the frozen earth. Tasked with holding the village's sacred Inquiry Book, Desmond expects to observe a quaint, localized mystery. Instead, he steps into a psychological nightmare.
Flawless, hyper-realistic charcoal portraits are mysteriously appearing on the reversed roots of the forest. These aren't just drawings—they are agonizingly intimate captures of the villagers' deepest, most shameful griefs. As the town unravels in panic, Desmond clings to logic, desperately hunting for a human artist. But the physical evidence defies reality, and the amber light of the woods is beginning to turn its observant, unyielding gaze toward him.
In this hauntingly atmospheric second volume of The Understory Inquiries, Joseph Pepe weaves a grimdark romantasy and dystopia-infused epic where the environment itself demands emotional confession. Will Desmond face the crushing weight of his past, or will the Understory pull his darkest sins out into the light?

They arrive alive. They always leave dead. But first, they give me their confessions and this time they're all about 'murder for hire'.

My name is Jack Steen, and for those who arrive on my 'death' ward at the Asylum, I'm the last face many will see before they die. I am the night nurse at an Asylum for the Criminally Insane, and most of my patients know me as their Angel of Death. I know them as mass murderers, rapists, and serial killers - among other things.

Here's what happens: they come on my floor, they give me their deathbed confession, and I help to make their death less painful. There's a catch, though: I want the real story, the one they haven't told anyone else. The majority of these killers are expert manipulators. They could be playing their final game with me by messing with my head. Now, maybe they're messing with yours too.

Inside this book are 4 DeathBed Confessions that relate to KILLERS FOR HIRE:

Patient Ernest is a cold-blooded killer. Period.Patient Tommy is the killer in the sea you don’t want to meet.Patient Shannon is a black, red, and green widow.Patient Jimmy Dale has a thing for hunting the two-legged prey.

WARNING: Some stories might be a trigger for something you have a hard time handling. But, these are the confessions of serial killers, mass murderers and such.
