Sinopsis

A COLLECTION OF STORIES FROM THE MARGINS OF AMERICAN LIFE Wayne Creed's debut collection pulls no punches. These are stories about people surviving on the edges—Eastern Shore watermen whose lives have collapsed, the junkies and car thieves marking time, and the wheelchair-bound and forgotten trying to carve out meaning in a world that's moved on without them. Written with unflinching honesty and surprising lyricism, Last Train Home maps the forgotten corners of life where loneliness mingles with grace, violence brushes against tenderness, and the desperate search for connection plays out in dive bars, detention centers, and abandoned churches. Creed's characters—ex-nuns and altar boys, teachers and drifters, boxers and bell ringers—navigate worlds where the American Dream has curdled into something darker, yet somehow, improbably, moments of beauty still break through. Raw, lyrical, and uncompromising, Last Train Home announces a bold new voice in American fiction—one unafraid to look directly at what we'd rather turn away from. From fishing villages to the streets of Moscow, Creed finds in the darkest corners the beauty and persistence of the human spirit. Last Train Home offers no easy answers—only the hard truth that grace sometimes arrives on the last train, just before the station closes for good.

The best of cult author Bruno Schulz's captivatingly strange and beautiful short stories. The stories in this collection are rich, tangled, and suffused with mystery and wonder. In the narrowing, winding city streets, strange figures roam. Great flocks of birds soar over rooftops, obscuring the sun. Cockroaches appear through cracks and scuttle across floorboards. Individuals careen from university buildings to dimly lit parlour rooms, through strange shops and endless storms. Crowded with moments of stunning beauty, the stories in this collection showcase Schulz's darkly modern sensibility, and his status as one of the great transformers of the ordinary into the fantastical.

James Mason is a rogue, some would say a lovable rogue. He is a salesman of items that any guesthouse on the south coast of England can’t manage without, and he spends his weeks travelling along from one city to another, encouraging landladies to purchase his products. In the evenings he stays with one or other of his customers and very often ends up spanking them or their eighteen-year-old daughters.
Each week he stays in a central point and usually stays at the same guesthouse from Sunday night to Saturday morning. How does he choose the guesthouse? I hear you ask. Is it always by the quality of their accommodation? “Yeah, right!”
He rates the guesthouses he stays at in the following way.
    1. Is the landlady a single woman?
    2. Is he properly looked after when he stays there?
    3. Does the landlady have a daughter?
    4. Is the room cheap?
    5. Will the landlady write an invoice for twice what she charges him, for his expense claim?
    6. Does the landlady and/or her daughter like to be spanked?
    7. Is the account a small one?
When he is thinking with the part of his brain that he keeps in his pants, all of the above criteria are combined and then discarded if he discovers that number six is in place.
He just loves spanking naughty girls, and you will be amazed at how many he finds when he’s travelling.
He is thirty-two years old and still looks pretty good in the suit that he wears when he is selling. No tie nowadays, of course. He doesn't exercise at all but he is very fit, being on his feet most of the day and exercising on his back in the evenings, three times a week usually. He never apologises for his behaviour. Up to you if you approve or not. Most people don’t seem to care.

Edgar Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on 19th January 1809. His father abandoned his family the following year and within a year his mother had died leaving him an orphan.
He was taken in by the Allan family but never formally adopted although he now referred to himself as Edgar Allan Poe. His father alternatively spoiled or chastised him and tension was frequent over gambling debts and monies for his education. His university years to study ancient and modern languages was cut short by lack of money and he enlisted as a private in the army claiming he was 22, it is more probable he was 18. After 2 years he obtained a discharge in order to take up an appointment at the military academy, West Point, where he failed to become an officer.
Poe had released his 1st poetry volume in 1827 and after his 3rd turned to prose and placing short stories in several magazines and journals. At age 26 he obtained a licence to marry his cousin. She was a mere 13 but they stayed together until her death from tuberculosis 11 years after.
In January 1845 ‘The Raven’ was published and became an instant classic. Thereafter followed the prose works for which he is now so rightly famed as a master of the mysterious and the macabre.
Edgar Allan Poe died at the tragically early age of 40 on 7th October 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Newspapers at the time reported Poe's death as ‘congestion of the brain’ or ‘cerebral inflammation’, common euphemisms for death from disreputable causes such as alcoholism but the actual cause of death remains a mystery.

From Far Around They Saw Us Burn is the eagerly awaited first short story collection from Alice Jolly, one of the most exciting and accomplished voices in British fiction today.

The extraordinary range of work gathered here is united by a fascination with how everyday interactions can transform our lives in unpredictable ways. These are stories of lonely people, outcasts and misfits, and the ghosts that inhabit our intimate spaces. The result is a compelling, arresting and, at times, devastating collection - not least in the title story, which was inspired by the tragic true events of the 1943 Cavan orphanage fire.

With an exemplary eye for detail and an intimate understanding of the complexities of human nature, Jolly's collection builds up towards the ultimate question: what is revealed of us when we peel away the surfaces, and is it enough?
