    Anthropology - Understanding...

Anthropology is the holistic study of humanity, examining human origins, cultural development, social structures, language, and biological evolution. It seeks to understand what it means to be human by analyzing the past, studying present societies, and considering future changes. Unlike other disciplines that focus on a single aspect of human life, anthropology integrates multiple perspectives to provide a comprehensive understanding of human existence.
The field of anthropology is traditionally divided into four main branches: biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and archaeology. Biological anthropology focuses on human evolution, genetics, and physical adaptation, comparing humans to primates and studying fossil records to understand the biological roots of our species. Cultural anthropology examines the customs, beliefs, and social institutions of different societies, exploring how culture shapes human behavior and interactions. Linguistic anthropology investigates the role of language in human communication, social identity, and cultural transmission. Archaeology studies past human civilizations through the excavation and analysis of artifacts, structures, and environmental data, providing insight into how societies developed over time.
A key principle of anthropology is cultural relativism, which emphasizes understanding cultures within their own context rather than judging them by external standards. This contrasts with ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture is superior to others. By adopting cultural relativism, anthropologists aim to promote a deeper appreciation for human diversity and challenge stereotypes and biases. Fieldwork, often involving ethnographic research, is a fundamental method in anthropology.

    Progressive Dystopia - Abolition...

San Francisco is the endgame of gentrification, where racialized displacement means that the Black population of the city hovers at just over three percent. The Robeson Justice Academy opened to serve the few remaining low-income neighborhoods of the city, with the mission of offering liberatory, social justice-themed education to youth of color. While it features a progressive curriculum, including Frantz Fanon and Audre Lorde, the majority Latinx school also has the district's highest suspension rates for Black students. In Progressive Dystopia Savannah Shange explores the potential for reconciling the school's marginalization of Black students with its sincere pursuit of multiracial uplift and solidarity. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and six years of experience teaching at the school, Shange outlines how the school fails its students and the community because it operates within a space predicated on antiblackness. Seeing San Francisco as a social laboratory for how Black communities survive the end of their worlds, Shange argues for abolition over revolution or progressive reform as the needed path toward Black freedom.

One of the most famous people in the world came to tour the city of Paris for the first time on June 28, 1940. Over the next three hours, he rode through the city’s streets, stopping to tour L’Opéra Paris. He rode down the Champs-Élysées toward the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower, where he had his picture taken. After passing through the Arc de Triomphe, he toured the Pantheon and old medieval churches, though he did not manage to see the Louvre or the Palace of Justice. Heading back to the airport, he told his staff, “It was the dream of my life to be permitted to see Paris. I cannot say how happy I am to have that dream fulfilled today.”
Four years after his tour, Adolf Hitler would order the city’s garrison commander, General Dietrich von Choltitz, to destroy Paris, warning his subordinate that the city "must not fall into the enemy's hand except lying in complete debris." Of course, Paris was not destroyed before the Allies liberated it, but it would take more than 4 years for them to wrest control of France from Nazi Germany after they took the country by storm in about a month in 1940. That said, it’s widely overlooked today given how history played out that as the power of Nazi Germany grew alarmingly during the 1930s, the French sought means to defend their territory against the rising menace of the Thousand-Year Reich. As architects of the most punitive measures in the Treaty of Versailles following World War I, France was a natural target for Teutonic retribution, so the Maginot Line, a series of interconnected strongpoints and fortifications running along much of France's eastern border, helped allay French fears of invasion.
The French had not expected the Germans would be able to move armored units through the Ardennes Forests, a heavily wooded region spanning parts of Belgium, France and the Netherlands. To the Allies’ great surprise, the Germans had no trouble rolling across these lands in the span of weeks.
