Sinopse

In "Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent," Washington Irving presents a charmingly satirical collection of essays that parody the literary and social culture of early 19th-century America. Written in the form of amusing letters, this work employs a blend of humor and eloquence, reflecting Irving's adeptness in capturing the zeitgeist of a burgeoning nation. The letters explore themes such as urbanity, societal conventions, and the intersections of nostalgia and modernity, all while employing a distinctive narrative voice that oscillates between the whimsical and the critical, showcasing Irving's pioneering contributions to American literature. Washington Irving, one of America's first notable authors, was born in 1783 and nurtured a profound appreciation for storytelling from a young age. His experiences in both Europe and America, along with a fascination for cultural contrasts, significantly influenced his writing. "Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent" emerged at a time when Irving sought to reconcile the rapidly changing landscape of American society with traditional sensibilities, revealing the cultural tensions he observed and critiqued. This collection remains a seminal work for those interested in American literary history, offering not only a delightful reading experience but also a keen insight into the formative years of American identity. Readers seeking humor, wit, and a glimpse into the societal norms of the past will find Irving's letters to be both entertaining and enlightening.

Includes previously unpublished interviews and photos: “His research is extensive, but the overall pace through these two hundred pages is breezy and entertaining.” —Vintage Rock   At a time when acid rock and heavy metal dominated popular music, The Band rebelled against the rebellion with tight ensemble arrangements, masterful musicianship, highly literate lyrics, and a respect for the musical traditions of the American South. Comprised of Canadians Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson, and Arkansas-born Levon Helm, The Band sparked a new appreciation for America’s musical roots, fusing R&B, jump blues, country, folk, boogie-woogie, swing, Cajun, New Orleans-style jazz, and rock, and setting the foundations for the Americana that would take hold thirty years later.   The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music explores the diverse influences on the quintet’s music, and the impact that their music had in turn on contemporary music and American society. Through previously unpublished interviews with Robbie Robertson, Eric Andersen, Pete Seeger, and the late Rick Danko, as well as numerous other sources, Craig Harris surveys The Band’s musical journey from sidemen for, among others, Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan to rock legends in their own right.    Touching on the evolution of rock and roll, the electrifying of folk music, unionism, the Civil Rights Movement, changes in radio formatting, shifting perceptions of the American South, and the commercializing of the counterculture, as well as drug dependency, alcoholism, suicide, greed, and the struggle against cancer, Harris takes readers from The Band’s groundbreaking albums, Music from Big Pink and The Band, through their final releases and solo recordings, as well as their historic appearances at Woodstock, the Isle of Wight Festival (with Dylan), Watkins Glen (with the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead), and the filmed final concert known as the Last Waltz (with an all-star cast). Sixteen previously unpublished photographs, by the author, are included.

Martha Nussbaum is one of the most influential philosophers of our time, particularly known for her contributions to feminist theory, political philosophy, and ethics. A professor at the University of Chicago, her work spans a wide array of topics including justice, human capabilities, human rights, and the role of emotions in moral decision-making. Nussbaum’s ideas have significantly impacted both academic philosophy and practical policy, with her innovative theories offering valuable insights into the intersection of ethics, politics, and human development.
At the heart of Nussbaum’s intellectual journey is the development of the capabilities approach, a framework she co-created with economist Amartya Sen. This approach is centered on the idea that justice should be evaluated based on individuals’ abilities to function and achieve various important life goals, rather than simply on income or wealth. The capabilities approach emphasizes human dignity and focuses on the conditions that allow people to live lives they have reason to value. It challenges traditional views of social justice by broadening the scope of what constitutes a flourishing life beyond mere economic success.
Nussbaum’s feminist philosophy is also pivotal in understanding her work. As an advocate for gender equality, she has critiqued traditional philosophical frameworks that have marginalized women’s voices and experiences. Her feminist perspective emphasizes the importance of recognizing the diverse and often undervalued roles that women play in society, and she works toward reshaping institutions to ensure that women’s capabilities are supported and nurtured. Nussbaum argues that feminism is not just about advocating for women’s rights but also about advancing a more inclusive and just society for all people, regardless of gender.

The Children We Left Behind -...

Nearly every major social problem in the West can be traced back to our declining appreciation for the nuclear family structure and our failure to plan for families properly. Our culture has shifted from prioritizing sacrifice for the benefit of innocent children to catering to the fleeting desires of the adults who bring them into the world.
As a result, family separation has become commonplace, and what we consider normal is often rationalized, even when it harms our children. The culture of radical individualism among adults has left children to bear the consequences of their parents' choices.
I was once that child who was left behind, neglected by his father, and witnessed his mother shoulder the load for our survival. My father's choice to abandon me physically and emotionally contributed to my decades of struggle with depression, low self-esteem, and suicidal ideation.
Unfortunately, my experience of homelessness, mental hospital incarceration, and perpetual internal strife is no longer rare. However, our stories are often ignored, and we avoid holding accountable the parents who have failed us.
If we are to change our culture's trajectory, we must sacrifice our pride and prioritize the needs of our children over our own selfish desires. Our children must come first, or they will come last-there is no middle ground.

The philosophy found in this work is the product of a childhood on a tobacco and cattle farm in central Kentucky, education at various schools, and a three-decade career in the US Navy while simultaneously contributing as a husband, father, and grandfather. The remainder of this book will be separated into phases reflective of the major changes in my life: the farm, schooling, and a navy career continuum from junior officer through flag officer. The lessons learned in earlier phases were often exported and applied later. The ever-increasing levels of responsibility served to teach new lessons.
