Sinopsis

In "A History of New York: From the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty," Washington Irving employs a satirical and humorous narrative style to chronicle the early history of New York City, particularly during the Dutch colonial period. Through the guise of a fictitious historian, Diedrich Knickerbocker, Irving blends fact and fiction, crafting a whimsical yet insightful commentary on society, politics, and culture. His work stands as a pivotal piece in American literature, epitomizing the early 19th-century romanticism that sought to define an American identity separate from European influences. Washington Irving, a pioneering American author and biographer, is often hailed as one of the first American writers to achieve international acclaim. His diverse experiences, including his travels in Europe and his observations on American life, influenced his perspective on the complexities of American history and identity. "A History of New York" showcases his ability to merge storytelling with historical narrative, reflecting concerns about urbanization and national character that were relevant during his era. Irving's witty exploration of New York's past is not merely an entertainment but also a thoughtful engagement with the emerging American consciousness. This book is recommended for anyone interested in the cultural roots of New York City or the development of the American literary tradition, offering both amusement and enlightenment in equal measure.

Sovok takes you on a front-row view of the transition from Soviet Union to liberated Russia, and her return back to today's tyranny. McKinney describes his interactions for over 20 years with dissidents, billionaires, mob bosses, presidents, bureaucrats, and political leaders, while he constantly breaks laws and bends rules, as do most of the people he works with. Sovok was described by one literary critic as "Jack Kerouac narrating the adventures of Thomas Pynchon's character, Tyrone Slothrop, only in Russia." For a less esoteric summary, a middle American went from washing dishes at a suburban Red Lobster to marrying a Soviet plutonium expert at the request of someone who was likely CIA. When US federal agencies threaten threaten him with prison sentences, the author proceeds to get embroiled in ever wilder escapades
By declaring itself to be the story a liar, the author prods the listener to question everyone and everything. Through personal anecdotes, a central theme of Sovok is that a network of loyal and moral friends can, and did, circumvent the world's strictest government regulations, defeat criminal syndicates, and make a lot of money while having more fun than most poor suckers know is possible.

'I never knew—I never imagined what mountains were before.'

History of a Six Weeks' Tour (1817) is a volume of travel-writing by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley, two of the best-known authors of the English Romantic period. Comprising prose narrative, correspondence, and poetry, it is a highly engaging account of their 'adventures and feelings' during two journeys from England to Switzerland.

The first part of History describes the titular 'tour' made by the not-yet-married Mary and Percy in July–September 1814, when mainland Europe was once again accessible to British travellers at the end of the Napoleonic wars. The long descriptive letters which make up the second part of History recall the so-called 'Frankenstein summer' of 1816, some of which the Shelleys spent with Byron on the shores of Lake Geneva. This part of History also provides significant biographical and historical context for Mary's novels Frankenstein (1818) and The Last Man (1826), key sections of which are set in the Alps, and for two of Percy's most canonical poems, 'Hymn to Intellectual Beauty' and 'Mont Blanc', the second of which was published for the first time in History. This edition includes an introduction, detailed notes, and appendices, placing the book in its historical and cultural context and showcasing the Shelleys' collaborative writing process.
