A thrilling scientific detective story, The Balance Within tells how researchers finally uncovered the elusive mind-body connection and what it means for our health. Since ancient times humans have felt intuitively that emotions and health are linked, and recently there has been much popular speculation about this notion. But until now, without compelling evidence, it has been impossible to say for sure that such a connection really exists and especially how it works. Now, that evidence has been discovered. In this beautifully written book, Dr. Esther Sternberg, whose discoveries were pivotal in helping to solve this mystery, provides first hand accounts of the breakthrough experiments that revealed the physical mechanisms - the nerves, cells, and hormones - used by the brain and immune system to communicate with each other. She describes just how stress can make us more susceptible to all types of illnesses, and how the immune system can alter our moods. Finally, she explains how our understanding of these connections in scientific terms is helping to answer such crucial questions as "Does stress make you sick?" "Is a positive outlook the key to better health?" and "How do our personal relationships, work, and other aspects of our lives affect our health?"A fascinating, elegantly written portrait of this rapidly emerging field with enormous potential for finding new ways to treat disease and cope with stress, The Balance Within is essential reading for anyone interested in making their body and mind whole again.

One Day University presents a series of audio lectures recorded in real-time from some of the top minds in the United States. Given by award-winning professors and experts in their field, these recorded lectures dive deep into the worlds of religion, government, literature, and social justice. You are your brain, according to modern neuroscience, but how exactly do your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and sense of self derive from this three-pound organ locked inside the black box of your skull? Cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Heather Berlin has been seeking answers to those questions for decades and finding surprising answers in the brains of people with psychiatric and neurological disorders. What happens in the brains of people who can't control themselves, or whose sense of self is fragmented, or lost entirely? By tracing the distinct brain circuits that give rise to her patients' disorders, Dr. Berlin is revealing the neurophysiology that makes each of us who we are. Join us on a journey deep into the brain, the mind, and the self, as Professor Berlin reveals the startling and exciting recent findings of cutting-edge neuroscience. How does your brain accomplish spontaneous creativity? How much self-control or "free will" do we really have? And what does the future hold, once brains begin to integrate with "neural prosthetics"? Get to know your dynamic unconscious mind, a bigger part of "who you are" than you could ever guess, with Dr. Berlin as your guide. This audio lecture includes a supplemental PDF.

A long time ago, scientists proved that drugs like cocaine and heroin were addictive in rat studies. They’d put a rat in a cage and give it two options to drink ordinary water, or water laced with the drug. Pretty soon the rat started preferring the drug and eventually became addicted and overdosed itself. So scientists proved that drugs were 'chemically' addictive.
But some other scientists started noticing an interesting trend, during the Vietnam war. It became known that a huge number of soldiers fighting in Vietnam were routinely using heroin to cope with the stress. Everyone started freaking out, thinking that after the war we’d have a mass epidemic of drug addicted return soldiers wandering around. But funnily enough, they found that once they came home, very few return soldiers continued the habit. They started asking questions. Such as, how come when little old grannies go into hospital dosed up on morphine for weeks on end, they don’t tend to go home still hooked on opioid pain killers? Obviously some people do, but most don’t. So if its so addictive, how can this be explained?
In this book we discover what exactly creates an addictive personality and how addictive personalities become addicted to drugs and behaviours. What exactly is it about certain people that behave in addictive ways and others that have no problems giving 'chemically' addictive things up. We list the two main cause of addictive personalities, where they come from, how they develop and how to get rid of them and overcome addiction once and for all.
If you have an addictive personality, have a partner or perhaps a son or daughter with an addictive personality this book is for you.
