Sinopse

What does war sound like in the human soul?

First published in 1865, Drum-Taps by Walt Whitman is a moving collection of poems inspired by the American Civil War. Written by a poet who served as a volunteer nurse to wounded soldiers, these poems capture the rhythms of marching armies, the pain of loss, and the quiet dignity of sacrifice.

Whitman's powerful free verse brings readers close to the lived experience of war—its energy, fear, compassion, and aftermath. Rather than glorifying battle, Drum-Taps honors the humanity of soldiers and the emotional cost of conflict, offering a deeply personal vision of a nation in crisis.

This eBook presents the original poems in a clear, accessible format, allowing modern readers to experience one of the most important poetic responses to war ever written.

Inside this eBook, you'll explore:

Vivid Civil War imagery and emotional realism

Themes of bravery, suffering, grief, and national identity

Whitman's revolutionary free-verse style

A landmark work of American war poetry

Frequently studied in literature and history courses, Drum-Taps remains essential reading for anyone interested in poetry, American history, or the human experience of war.

The Minerva Club might look like any other London gentlemen’s club but behind its respectable and discreet façade, some of the most ambitious schemes for heists, money-making and evasion of the law are being worked out. It’s an exclusive club for criminals. Entry qualification: members must have served a prison sentence of two years minimum. Though the club’s criminal ventures don’t always go as planned…

From trying to break into an old prison cell and stealing a stash of jewels hidden during a previous incarceration, love getting in the way during a hideout from the police, a cleverly planned break-in being interrupted by an unexpected guest, to figuring out where to steal a last-minute wedding cake – the club’s amiable criminals somehow always achieve their goal in the most surprising ways.

This collection of five short stories follows the Minerva Club’s (mis)adventures and evokes the very best of humorous classic crime fiction.

Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, and As You Like It are usually regarded as Shakespeare’s crowning achievements in the world of mirth and humor. In this group of plays, written during the playwright’s Second Period (1595–1600), the author depicts chiefly the cheerful, energetic side of life.
In As You Like It, a wicked Duke expels his virtuous brother, the lawful ruler, from his domains. The banished Duke takes refuge with his followers in the Forest of Arden, where they live as free a life as did Robin Hood and his merry men. They are presently sought out by the Duke’s daughter Rosalind and her cousin Celia, who have been banished by the usurper. Also among the banished is Orlando, a virtuous young man, who is being pursued by his wicked brother Oliver, pursuant to the orders of the usurping duke. Orlando and Rosalind immediately fall in love, and she, disguised as a boy under the name of Ganymede, makes sport with him throughout the play. Eventually all ends happily – with conversions, repentance and revelations of love.
Featuring the voices of Linda Barrans, Blaise Doran, Laura Richcreek, Emma Faye, Claudia Anglade, P J Morgan, Gary MacFadden, Denis Daly, Marty Krz, Dara Brown, Trisha Rose, John Burlinson, and Kendra Murray.
    Audio edited by Denis Daly
Tunes for songs provided by Alan Weyman.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.
