Sinopsis

In "Night Watches. Complete Series," W. W. Jacobs presents a series of short stories weaving together spookiness and humor with masterful ease. This collection illustrates Jacobs' adeptness at creating atmospheric tension through vivid descriptions and an engaging narrative style. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century England, the stories frequently explore themes of the supernatural, human folly, and the intricacies of everyday life, merging the mundane with the eerie in a captivating fashion that showcases his command over language and dialogue. W. W. Jacobs (1863-1943), a prominent figure in British literature, cultivated a flair for both humor and the macabre, influenced by his upbringing in London and his experiences as a writer and journalist. His most famous work, "The Monkey's Paw," epitomizes his ability to evoke dread through simple yet poignant storytelling. Jacobs' unique blend of comedic elements and chilling narratives in "Night Watches" reflects a keen awareness of Victorian and Edwardian literary traditions, making his work particularly resonant during the historical transition between the two eras. This collection is highly recommended for readers who appreciate nuanced storytelling that straddles the line between humor and the supernatural. Jacobs'Äô ability to evoke strong imagery and engage readers with authentic characters makes "Night Watches. Complete Series" an entertaining yet thought-provoking read for anyone intrigued by the complexities of human nature and the mysteries that lurk in the shadows.

"Where does madness leave off and reality begin?"

Written in late 1931, The Shadow over Innsmouth is a typically Lovecraftian blend of creeping dread and cosmic horror that emphasises the danger inherent in the pursuit of forbidden knowledge.

It tells the story of a young historian who, while investigating the genealogy of his family in New England, is intrigued to learn about the mysterious and decrepit fishing-town of Innsmouth, a place with a reputation for strangeness and a notoriously unusual-looking population. When he investigates the town's strange customs and unsettling inhabitants, he uncovers a horrifying truth about ancient pacts, deep-sea horrors, and personal revelations that challenge his own sanity.
The Shadow over Innsmouth forms part of the "Cthulhu Mythos", referencing several motifs, shared place names and mythical creatures that have appreared in other stories set in that universe.

Though virtually unknown and financially unsuccessful during his lifetime, H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is now regarded as one of the most influential 20th-century writers of supernatural horror fiction. Widely credited with inventing the "cosmic horror" genre—fiction that explores humanity's insignificance in the face of vast, unknowable cosmic forces—he also created the "Cthulhu Mythos", a shared universe of ancient alien beings and forbidden knowledge that has influenced generations of horror and science fiction writers.
