Sinopsis

In "The Magician," W. Somerset Maugham crafts a gripping narrative that artfully melds elements of psychological drama and early 20th-century literature, exploring themes of obsession, power, and the arcane. Set against a backdrop of bohemian Paris, Maugham intricately weaves the story of a young writer, Oliver Haddo, whose fascination with the mysterious and esoteric leads him into the orbit of a charismatic yet malevolent magician. The novel's style is marked by Maugham's characteristic prose—sharp, incisive, and often laden with irony—a reflection of both his theatrical background and his keen observations on the human condition, making it resonate with readers seeking both entertainment and deeper philosophical musings. W. Somerset Maugham, renowned for his acute social commentaries and intricate character studies, was influenced by his experiences as a playwright and a traveler across diverse cultures. These experiences, coupled with his skepticism towards the supernatural, fueled his exploration of the darker facets of human ambition and desire in "The Magician." Maugham's familiarity with the intersections of art and existential thought allows his narrative to probe not only the psyche of its central character but also the universal struggle for meaning in an indifferent universe. This compelling novel is a must-read for fans of psychological fiction and those intrigued by the interplay of magic and reality. Maugham's exploration of the darker sides of human nature and ambition offers valuable insights into the complexities of the human experience, making "The Magician" a timeless work that continues to captivate and provoke thought.

Lorelei Collins possesses a soft heart for any animal in need, so when she finds a buffalo calf bawling beside its lifeless mother, she can't help but bring it home to raise on the ranch she and her sisters are building in the Rocky Mountain wilderness. Little does she realize that its white coloring is rare and considered sacred by Native Americans, which makes it highly valuable to them and European trappers alike. Men soon begin to visit their ranch to regard the marvel, with some trying to woo Lorelei into marriage and others trying to steal the calf outright.

When the men's advances become more sinister, Lorelei approaches Tanner Mason, the quiet and mysterious owner of the new trading post, with an idea: she and the calf will move to his post, along with her family's trusted Blackfoot friend. This will solve both their problems by bringing customers to his trade room and protecting her family from the trouble brought on by so many strangers. Yet as the danger travels with her, Lorelei and Tanner are faced with a threat greater than anything they're prepared for--one that will test the limits of their abilities and the love growing between them.

This is an audio enhanced version - with music and sound effects - of a book long hailed as one of the great science fiction classics, H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau. It tells the story of Edward Prendick, a shipwreck survivor who is brought to an uncharted island where he encounters Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist bent on experimenting with human/animal hybrids. Described by Wells himself as "an exercise in youthful blasphemy," this story is a disturbing and fascinating look into the moral responsibility of scientific experimentation, the ethics of meddling with the natural world and, ultimately, what it means to be human.

Clotilde Augusta Inez Mary Graves was born on the 3rd June 1863 at Buttevant Castle, Co. Cork, to parents with military backgrounds.
At age nine, the family moved to Southsea in England for yet another military posting. Her father’s postings gave her valuable experiences that would be put to good use in later years in some of her literary works.
She was educated at a Catholic convent in Lourdes before returning to London in 1884 to study art in Bloomsbury. She worked part-time at the British Museum and the Royal Female School of Art and generated further income by drawing little pen-and-ink grotesques for the comic papers.
A few years later a chance meeting found her writing extra lyrics for a pantomime version of Puss in Boots. She followed up with several financially successful plays, both in London and New York, and gained a measure of notoriety in one with the comparison of marriage and prostitution.
Despite her dramatic success she published her first novel in 1911 under the pseudonym of Richard Dehan which she continued to use for later works. As well as novels and plays she published collections of short stories which glow with talent and invention.
She was an unusual figure in London society, wearing her hair short, taking on a masculine manner and cut of clothing, and smoking cigarettes in public when such traits were considered eccentric at best. Add to this her admired collection of Chinese and Japanese trophies, her enthusiasm for fly-fishing and her riding of a tricycle and you have a perfect image of this fascinating writer.
Clotilde Graves died at the convent of Our Lady of Lourdes at Hatch End in Middlesex, on the 3rd December 1932. She was 69.
