The Philosophical Dictionary is an encyclopedic dictionary published by the Enlightenment thinker Voltaire in 1764. The alphabetically arranged articles often criticize the Roman Catholic Church, Judaism, Islam, and other institutions.

François-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, philosopher (philosophe) and historian. Known by his nom de plume M. de Voltaire he was famous for his wit, in addition to his criticism of Christianity—especially of the Roman Catholic Church—and of slavery. Voltaire was an advocate of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and separation of church and state.

A written companion and workbook for listeners seeking to reclaim their bodies as home in healing from sexual trauma.

Body rites as a holistic healing journey, anchored in the practice of decolonizing healing and reclaiming body sovereignty, reaches back into indigenous roots and land-based healing. It centers remembering as a means of survival.

This workbook is the first of its kind: a resource of rituals divided into four healing journeys for Black women, femmes, and nonbinary survivors of sexual assault. The experiential workbook moves beyond prescriptive self-help models by providing a gentle guide and liaison to explore the impact of sexual trauma on the mind, body, heart, and spirit. It is an invitation to heal holistically, drawing upon psychophysiology, lived body wisdom, trauma-informed embodiment practices, kinship and ancestral connections, and African spiritual practices. Most urgently, this book is a series of intimate conversations with your "self"; and remembrance that healing lives at the core of your intuition.

The Invisible Woman: The True Story of Virginia Hall, the American Female Spy Who Outwitted the Nazis and Helped Win World War II uncovers the remarkable life of one of the most daring and effective spies of World War II. Operating behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied Europe, Virginia Hall's contributions were crucial to the success of the Allied war effort, yet her story remained largely hidden for decades.

Born in 1906 in Baltimore, Hall was an unlikely candidate for espionage, yet after losing her leg in a hunting accident, she defied the odds and became one of the most feared operatives in the Allied intelligence community. Despite the deeply ingrained gender biases and the physical limitations imposed by her prosthetic leg, Hall outsmarted the Gestapo and played a pivotal role in disrupting Nazi operations, particularly in France. Her work with the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) directly contributed to critical victories, including the success of D-Day.

Though she was dubbed "the most dangerous Allied spy in France," Hall was never publicly recognized during her lifetime. Her story remained overshadowed, buried under layers of secrecy, sexism, and institutional neglect. It wasn’t until decades later that the world began to uncover the extent of her achievements, with statues, books, and documentaries finally bringing her legacy into the light.

The Invisible Woman is a tribute to Virginia Hall’s courage, intelligence, and resilience. It not only recounts the thrilling espionage operations that helped win the war but also addresses the systemic biases Hall faced — gender, disability, and institutional neglect — offering a powerful reflection on the fight for recognition that continues for women in history.

Few agricultural commodities have influenced world history as dramatically as the humble cotton. And not some distant, unrecognisable antiquity, but times far closer to the present. Less than two centuries ago, these feathery balls nearly split America into two, triggered a civil war, propelled Bombay into metropolitan stardom, and birthed the oldest stock exchange in Asia. All in a space of 10 years. How did one commodity manage to influence so much of our story in such a short span of time? Let's find out.

Humans are hard-wired for collaboration, and new technologies of communication act as a super-amplifier of our natural collaborative mindset. This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series examines the emergence of a new kind of social collaboration enabled by networked technologies. This new collaborative society might be characterized as a series of services and startups that enable peer-to-peer exchanges and interactions though technology. Some believe that the economic aspects of the new collaboration have the potential to make society more equitable; others see collaborative communities based on sharing as a cover for social injustice and user exploitation.

The book covers the "sharing economy," and the hijacking of the term by corporations; different models of peer production, and motivations to participate; collaborative media production and consumption, the definitions of "amateur" and "professional," and the power of memes; hactivism and social movements, including Anonymous and anti-ACTA protest; collaborative knowledge creation, including citizen science; collaborative self-tracking; and internet-mediated social relations, as seen in the use of Instagram, Snapchat, and Tinder. Finally, the book considers the future of these collaborative tendencies and the disruptions caused by fake news, bots, and other challenges.

  • Swifterature - A Love Story: English Literature and Taylor Swift - cover

    Swifterature - A Love Story:...

A daring literary fusion of pop culture and feminism, Swifterature captures the special connection between English literature and the worldwide phenomenon of Taylor Swift.
Swifterature captures a unique fusion of different elements: fandom, feminism, and a defense of both literature and popular culture.
The narrative is split into thirteen chapters that use Swift's lyrics as departure points. The listener experiences the inspiring influence of English literature as Swift’s lens breathes new vitality and urgency into older texts. McCausland also writes about her own experiences as she copes with intense media scrutiny and is forced to defend her academic integrity.
She argues that Swift, through her self-conscious engagement with classic works of literature and her extraordinary popularity, invites us to reflect not only on the culture of our past but also of our present. Swifterature shows how Swift’s place on the world’s stage can teach us about many things, from feminism to politics, nature to childhood. In the process the book makes a compelling case that studying Taylor Swift also turns us into better readers, not only of literature but of ourselves and each other.
