Sinopsis

Voltaire’s satire of eighteenth-century Europe, hailed as one of the most influential works in the Western canon Candide’s misfortunes begin when his uncle, a German baron, banishes him for kissing the baron’s daughter, Cunégonde. Forced to make his own way in the world, Candide goes from conscription in the Bulgar army, to Lisbon, after a harrowing voyage by sea, to the tutelage of the Enlightenment philosopher Pangloss. After an unexpected reunion with his beloved Cunégonde, Candide finds that further misadventure awaits, first through South America and then back in Europe, where he settles in the countryside. Among the most widely renowned texts of western literature, Candide lives on two hundred fifty years since its first publication as a supreme example of political, philosophical, and religious satire whose wit and power of observation have influenced writers for generations. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

"Acclaimed author and feisty nonagenarian Hotchner's witty ruminations about the art of living well into old age...with brio and a touch of his trademark sass, Hotchner writes about rediscovering love after 75, finding joy in a scrappy African gray parrot he named after his longtime friend, Ernest Hemingway, and going on his very first safari at age 88." - Kirkus ReviewsWhen youngsters in their seventies and eighties, nervously lurching toward the horizon of ninety, ask me, "What's the secret?" That's what I tell them: "O.J. in the morning, gin and tonic at night."You don't have to be in your seventies or eighties to enjoy A. E. Hotchner's elixir for aging happily, but after reading this charming collection of essays, you may wish you were. Nonagenarian, novelist, playwright, and biographer, Hotchner gives us heartfelt and laugh-out-loud anecdotes that describe his unique reflections on the aging process. His musings cover everything from the outlandish commercials that target the older generation (Viagra, Cialis, and Flomax) to suggestions on adapting the tennis game for seniors (he suggests lowering the net by two inches and moving all outer lines two feet inward) to the advantages of having a pet (his pet parrot often tells guests to "kiss my ass").He can equally capture the headier side of aging, which is bittersweetly revealed in his piece about divorce. With his disarming, eloquent voice and dry sense of humor, Hotch illuminates life's wisdoms through his optimistic, witty, and romantic outlook, all the while making you feel, well, not unhappy about growing older.O.J. in the Morning, G&T at Night is a book of courageous advice, humorous wisdom, and, above all, good strategies for how to stay young at heart.

On October 26, 1970, G.B. Trudeau introduced the world to a college jock named B.D. and his inept and geeky roommate, Mike Doonesbury. Fourteen thousand strips later, Doonesbury has become one of the most beloved and acclaimed comic strips in history. Over the years, the world of Doonesbury grew uniquely vast, sustained by an intricately woven web of relationships—over forty major characters spanning three generations.

The complete 40: A Doonesbury Anthology presents more than 1,800 comic strips that chart key adventures and cast connections over the last four decades. Dropped in throughout this rolling narrative are twenty detailed essays in which Trudeau contemplates his characters, including portraits of core characters such as Duke and Honey, Zonker, Joanie, and Rev. Sloan, as well as more recent additions, such as Zipper, Alex, and Toggle. Trudeau also includes an annotated diagram that maps the mind-boggling matrix of character relationships.

This first volume of the four-volume e-book edition of 40 covers the years 1970 to 1979 for the celebrated cartoon strip.

Bob and Brigit, a Canadian couple, have managed to screw up their previously successful lives when a wild investment in GoldRush, a mining company, lands the family in deep debt. Brigit is a heroine through it all, we might say a heroine-martyr. The debt paid off, and Brigit persuades Bob they need to hike the Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail. Bob is all up for some European sophistication and good times. Grand idea, but if crossing mountain passes, sleepless hours in noisy hostels and getting separated on the trail were their only challenges, they would surely have pulled through, but now, they must deal with old and new secrets that the trail churns up.
There is energy and humour and lessons learnt, often in unexpected ways, from other pilgrims, local people, monks, nuns and history. Pardon my Camino is a thoughtful and humorous, better-late-than-never coming-of-age story, that will keep you laughing, concerned, engaged, and entertained and carry you off on an adventure in Spain to follow the trail.

Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy was first performed in 1777 and focuses on the intrigues and scandals of the British upper classes. Lady Sneerwell wants to marry Charles Surface, while Joseph Surface wants to marry Maria, an heiress and ward of Sir Peter Teazle. Maria, however, prefers Charles over Joseph. In order to detach her from Charles, Lady Sneerwell and Joseph spread rumors about an affair between Charles and Lady Teazle, Sir Peter's new young wife. Meanwhile, Sir Oliver Surface, newly returned from the East Indies, assumes various disguises to test his nephews' characters. Misunderstandings, mistaken identities, gossip, and bad behavior abound in this uproarious comedy.
