Sinopse

The Aeneid, Virgil's magnum opus, is an epic poem that intricately weaves the founding myths of Rome through the journey of its hero, Aeneas. Written in dactylic hexameter, the poem resonates with the grandeur and gravitas typical of classical epics, reminiscent of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Its rich narrative details not only highlight Aeneas's trials and tribulations but also delve into themes of fate, piety, and national identity, illuminating the socio-political context of Augustan Rome. Virgil's exquisite language and emotional depth craft a multifaceted portrayal of a hero whose personal sacrifices serve a greater purpose, ultimately linking the past to Rome's imperial destiny. Virgil, a pivotal figure in Latin literature, was deeply influenced by the political turmoil of his time, having lived through the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of Augustus. His first-hand experiences with the struggles of displacement and conflict resonate throughout The Aeneid. The poet sought not only to celebrate Roman leadership but also to impart moral and ethical lessons, positioning Aeneas as a model of virtuous conduct amidst adversity. The Aeneid is an essential read for anyone interested in classical literature, history, or the intricate construction of cultural identity. Its themes remain profoundly relevant, providing insight into the human experience and the complexities of legacy. Readers will find in Virgil's timeless verse a powerful exploration of duty, resilience, and the destinies that shape nations.

July 1889, London. A flea bites a rat. A rat spooks a horse. A horse kicks a man. As the chain reaction continues, a boy and his mother find themselves swept up in a national scandal that will reshape both their lives – and the country.
James Fritz's play The Flea is a retelling of the Cleveland Street Scandal that shook England – from the streets of Bermondsey to the halls of Buckingham Palace – and features a flea, a horse, a detective, a queen, a pimp, a god, and Charlie, the telegraph boy who knelt before the Crown.
This anarchic and affecting play was first performed at The Yard Theatre, London, in October 2023, directed by Artistic Director Jay Miller.

THE MALEVOLENT VOLUME EXPLORES THE MYTHS AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF BLACK BEING, ON A CONTINUUM BETWEEN THE MONSTROUS AND THE SUBLIME.

Subverting celebrated classics of poetry and mythology and examining horrors from contemporary film and cultural fact, National Book Award winner Justin Phillip Reed engages darkness as an aesthetic to conjure the revenant animus that lurks beneath the exploited civilities of marginalized people. In these poems, Reed finds agency in the other-than-human identities assigned to those assaulted by savageries of the state. In doing so, he summons a retaliatory, counter-violent Black spirit to revolt and to inhabit the revolting.

“Reed blends intersectional politics and bodily hunger in precise, thorny language.”—New York Times

    Duino Elegies

We have a marvelous, almost legendary image of the circumstances in which the composition of this great poem began. Rainer Maria Rilke was staying at Duino Castle, on a rocky headland of the Adriatic Sea near Trieste.
One morning, he walked out onto the battlements and climbed down to where the cliffs dropped sharply to the sea. From out of the fierce wind, Rilke seemed to hear a voice: Wer, wenn ich schriee, horte mich denn aus der Engel Ordnungen? (If I cried out, who would hear me up there, among the angelic orders?).
He wrote these words, the opening of the first Duino Elegy, in his notebook, then went inside to continue what was to be his major opus—completely only after another ten, tormented years of effort—and one of the literary masterpieces of the century.
Duino Elegies speaks in a voice that is both intimate and majestic on the mysteries of human life and our attempt, in the words of the translator David Young, “to use our self-consciousness to some advantage: to transcend, through art and the imagination, our self-deception and our fear.”
