Summary

Delve into the exquisite, sensuous sculpture of Camille Claudel with this in-depth look at her remarkable body of work. Along with many of her paintings and drawings, her sculpture is examined with a focus which reveals every intricate detail of her incredible renditions of movement and human emotions. Fascinated from a young age by crafting models with her hands, French sculptor, painter, and draughtswoman Camille Claudel (1864-1943) fought to overcome the hurdles placed in the way of female artists and carved a place for herself in the history of art. Following an apprenticeship with Alfred Boucher, Claudel entered the studio of Auguste Rodin, with whom she had a tumultuous ten-year love affair which often threatened to eclipse her art. The two artists had a profound impact on one another, each of their features appearing in the other’s work. After breaking off the relationship to forge her own path, Claudel created a stunning, incredibly modern oeuvre. Though many were destroyed by her own hands, those that remain are a powerful testament to her artistic genius.

Stanislavski was the first person to develop a cogent and practical system of acting. Throughout his life he sought the answers to such fundamental questions as: "What is great acting?" and "How can you find inspiration in every performance?" Stanislavski remains the most important influence on actor training today, and yet many of his ideas are little known, or even misunderstood.Stanislavski For Beginners charts the development of the Stanislavski system. It includes a clear exposition of the key elements of the system and explores his Method of Physical Actions, which he worked on in the years before his death, and which he called “the result of my whole life’s work.”

Often appearing as a mere onlooker who didn't really want to be there, Charlie Watts - 'the silent Stone' - embraced fame reluctantly. Yet, ironically, if any one of the Stones could have made it big without the rest, it surely would have been Watts, who showed as much early promise as an artist as he did a jazz drummer.

Understated and seemingly underwhelmed, Watts provided a stark contrast to the brash Keith Richards and the bohemian Brian Jones, and was, in some ways, an unlikely candidate for the drummer's stool. Forty years later, however, he is regarded by many as the one factor that has kept the band going, bringing vitality to their music as well as artistry to their album covers.

Charlie Watts, remarkably the first biography of the drummer, continues Alan Clayson's study of The Rolling Stones with an intriguing insight into the life of the man who has been keeping time for the Stones for over four decades.

Alan Clayson is a noted writer and author of many musical biographies, including The Beatles Box biography set.

Brian Southall's Northern Songs - The True Story Of The Beatles Song Publishing Empire is the story of how Lennon and McCartney lost the most valuable song publishing catalogue in the world. This is a staggering saga of incompetence, duplicity and music industry politics.

How did major singer turned publisher Dick James get to handle Lennon and McCartney's songs? Why did Michael Jackson's stake in the legendary catalogue cause a rift with Paul McCartney? Why does Paul McCartney now own just two Beatles songs?

Also includes interviews with George Martin, Paul McCartney, the late Dick James' son Steven, Yoko Ono and those in the know from Apple Corp, DJM and EMI.

After 10 years as a journalist, including working for Melody Maker and Disc, Brian Southall joined A&M Records between 1973 and 2003 and worked for EMI records as a consultant to Warner Music International, HMV Group and the British Phonographic Industry. He has written books including the History of Abbey Road Studios, The A-Z of Record Labels and the Story of the Brit Awards.
