~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
"You keep staring at me," Casey said.
Robin smiled. "Yes."
"What do you want to say to me?" Her slender finger drew a perpetual circle on the granite counter, that narrow lip between the sink and the cool air of the kitchen. "You saw me, didn't you?"
"When?"
Casey squeezed the lip. "Last Saturday. With Simon."
"Maybe."
A husky laugh cut its way through the girl's teeth. She panted for a moment, then rolled her fingers up her throat. She tried to loosen the sudden knot that had formed there, or identify the source of the heat. But it was fruitless. She reached back, to the tie that bound her hair, and pulled it loose. Her dark tresses skated over her naked shoulders. "You watched me."
"I did."
"How long did you watch me?"
"I watched the whole thing."
"Why?" She turned to Robin at last, and knew precisely why.
Neither woman knew why her body felt so hot, but they understood the sensation. Raw arousal was in the air, almost thick enough to taste. It emanated from Robin's pores and saturated the air that Casey breathed. Lust spread from her lungs to other sensitive body parts, until she was consciously squeezing her thighs together. She had felt this queer attraction the night before, when she smelled Robin's sweat, but ascribed it to the alcohol...
Simon had never looked at her the way Robin did now - the way, she realized, that the older woman had always looked at her. "Am I safe here?" she asked.
"I don't know," Robin said.
"So I should say thank you and leave."
"Yes," Robin said.
"But if I don't leave?" Casey squeezed the counter lip. "What will you do if I don't leave?"
"I'll tell you how to thank me."
Casey tugged at her hair, and bit her lip, and gazed down into Robin's piercing eyes. "How do I thank you?" she whispered.
    Public transportation is often presented as the backbone of modern cities, a vital system that connects people to jobs, schools, and essential services. Advocates promote it as an affordable, eco-friendly, and efficient alternative to private vehicles, reducing congestion and improving urban mobility. Governments and transit agencies highlight its benefits, claiming it serves the public good while advancing sustainability goals. However, beyond the polished image of well-maintained buses, sleek trains, and promises of convenience, there lies a far more complicated and often troubling reality.
    The public is frequently told that mass transit is the key to reducing traffic and lowering pollution, yet many systems fail to deliver on these promises. Trains break down, buses run late, and commuters find themselves packed into overcrowded vehicles, often feeling unsafe. Meanwhile, taxpayers pour billions into these systems, only to see fare increases, service cuts, and poorly maintained infrastructure. The question arises: If public transportation is supposed to be a solution, why does it so often feel like a problem?
    Another significant issue is safety. Crime rates on buses, subways, and train platforms have become a growing concern, with riders facing theft, assault, and harassment. Many transit systems lack sufficient security measures, leaving passengers vulnerable. The psychological stress of commuting through unsafe environments can be overwhelming, particularly for women, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations. Despite these risks, officials frequently downplay crime statistics, insisting that public transit remains a safe option.
    What sets humans apart from other animals? The accumulation of discoveries throughout history, big and small, has enabled us to build global civilizations and gain power to shape our environment. But what makes humans as a species so innovative?
    Min W. Jung offers a new understanding of the neural basis of innovation in terms of humans' exceptional capacity for imagination and high-level abstraction. He provides an engaging account of recent advances in neuroscience that have shed light on the neural underpinnings of these profoundly important abilities. Jung examines key discoveries concerning the hippocampus and neural circuits that have demystified the processes underlying imagination and abstract thinking. He also considers how these capacities might have evolved as well as possible futures for intelligence.
    Bringing together disparate findings in neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and artificial intelligence, A Brain for Innovation develops a unified perspective on the mechanisms of imagination, abstract thought, and creativity. Presenting cutting-edge neuroscientific research in a way that is accessible to listeners without a background in the subject, this book is essential for anyone interested in the biological basis of one of the most fundamental aspects of human nature.
    This book explores ideas around minimalism, simplicity and how to live comfortably with less.
    The modern world can be a complicated, frenzied, and noisy place, filled with too many options, products, ideas and opinions. That explains why what many of us long for is simplicity: a life that can be more pared down, peaceful, and focused on the essentials.
    But finding simplicity is not always easy; it isn’t just a case of emptying out our closets or trimming back commitments in our diaries. True simplicity requires that we understand the roots of our distractions – and develop a canny respect for the stubborn reasons why things can grow complex and overwhelming.
    This book is a guide to the simpler lives we crave and deserve. It considers how we might achieve simplicity across a range of areas. Along the way, we learn about Zen Buddhism, modernist architecture, monasteries, psychoanalysis, and why we probably don’t need more than three good friends or a few treasured belongings.
    It isn’t enough that our lives should look simple; they need to be simple from the inside. This book takes a psychological approach, guiding us towards less contorted hearts and minds. We have for too long been drowning in excess and clutter from a confusion about our aspirations; A Simpler Life helps us tune out the static and focus on what properly matters to us.
    The Big Change - America...
    During the first fifty years of the twentieth century, the United States saw two world wars, a devastating economic depression, and more social, political, and economic changes than in any other five-decade period before. Frederick Lewis Allen, former editor of Harper's Magazine, recounts these years—spanning World War I, the Progressive Era, the Great Depression, World War II, and the early Cold War—in vivid detail, from the fashions and customs of the times to major events that changed the course of history.
    Politically, the United States grew into its own as a global superpower during these years, even as domestic developments altered the everyday lives of its citizens. The introduction of the automobile, mass production, and organized labor changed the way Americans lived and worked, while innovations like penicillin and government regulation of food safety contributed to an increase in average life expectancy from forty-nine years in 1900 to sixty-eight years in 1950. With the development of a strong, centralized government, a thriving middle class, and widespread economic prosperity, the nation emerged from the Second World War transformed in virtually every way.
    Richly informative, The Big Change is an indispensable volume charting the many changes that ushered in our contemporary age.
