Sinopsis

"Hand in hand, two on the grey concrete, him and I. And we, Mum…We had just wanted some vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips. We hadn't wanted anything more out of life, but life surprised us."Sometimes, one's most sincere thoughts and feelings can only be expressed in a letter to their mother. Letters to you, to her, to no one is a moving story about a girl growing up in a Bulgarian orphanage told through intimate letters to her imaginary mother. The letters span years, recording a journey exploring friendship, loss, anorexia, and, most of all, dreams.

"Letters to you, to her, to no one" was innitially publised by Janet 45 in the Bulgarian Language, "Писма до теб, до нея, до никого", and went on to win the National Competition for Debut Literature Southern Spring and then added to to the 2023 White Ravens catalogue.

These tales are of ordinary but poignant beauty: at the pub, strangers regale each other with memories of Christmases past; lovers share tales over dinner about how they met, their former lovers, and each other; a woman even tells a story to her fourteen-year-old self.

As Smith explores the subtle links between what we know and what we feel, she creates an exuberant, masterly collection that is packed full of ideas, humor, nuance, and compassion. Ali Smith and the short story are made for each other.
