Floella describes arriving in London as a child, part of the Windrush generation, and the pain caused by the racism she encountered every day. It was offset by the love of her parents, who gave her the pride in her heritage, self-belief and confidence that have carried her through life. From winning a role in groundbreaking musical Hair (while clearly stating she would not take her clothes off) to breaking down barriers on Play School, from refusing to be typecast in roles to speaking out for diversity at the BBC and BAFTA, she has remained true to herself. She also reveals how she met husband Keith, became a mother of two, was befriended by Kenneth Williams, hugged President Obama, and found a purpose that would underpin everything she did – campaigning for the needs of children. Sharing the lessons she has learned, imbued with her joy and positivity, this autobiography is the moving testimony of a remarkable woman.

    Ella D'Arcy - A Short Story...

Ella D'Arcy was born on 23rd August 1857 in London, one of nine children.

Her education spanned London, Germany, France and the Channel Islands. A student of fine art, her poor eyesight meant a switch to literature was needed and with this she had hopes to be an author.

She worked as a contributor and unofficial editor, alongside Henry Harland, to The Yellow Book, Aubrey Beardsley’s sensational quarterly magazine that combined art, stories, poetry, essays and much else besides. D'Arcy wrote several stories for the magazine and her stories have an undeniable psychological and realist style through her engagement with various themes from marriage, the family, imitation through to deception.

Recognition of her talents grew after the publication of ‘Irremediable’, in the Yellow Book, where it received much praise from critics.

She also wrote and published in the Argosy, Blackwood's Magazine, and Temple Bar.

However, D’Arcy’s canon was small and, apart from her magazine stories, her book publishing was limited to ‘Monochromes’ (1895), ‘Modern Instances’ and ‘The Bishop’s Dilemma’ (1898). She also translated André Maurois's biography of Percy Bysshe Shelley entitled ‘Ariel’ (1924).

Her diligence with work aside she was notorious for her inability to maintain relationships with friends. When she did appear to them it was often unannounced. This earned her the sobriquet 'Goblin Ella.'

D'Arcy spent much of her life living alone, though she had a constant urge to travel, but usually she resided on the edge of poverty. Her writing was often motivated by this need.

Much of her later life was spent in Paris before returning to London in 1937, where she died, in hospital, on 5th September 1937.

The Combals are not unacquainted with death: they have never quite recovered from the loss of one of them in childhood. And now, on Valentine's Day, they are losing another.
Guddy races to see her sister, Jerry and Bjarne avoid the phone and its news, Jean finds himself on a beach, and Annie fends off her mother's persistent questions about what's happening. And Therese tries to forgive them all before it's too late.
As each is forced to face the news of Therese's impending death, their actions weave a nuanced portrait of a family, of the devastating reach of childhood grief.
What if thinking is all we have at the end of the day? What if how we react really is all we can control? This transcendent first novel from award-winning poet Sina Queyras tells the story of childhood by illustrating six adult minds grappling with it: noticing, reaching, loving and flailing.

"My Adventures with Your Money" is a book written by George Graham Rice, an American journalist and writer who was active in the early 20th century. The book is a memoir that recounts Rice's experiences as a "stock tout" or promoter of fraudulent investment schemes during the early years of the stock market.
Rice was notorious for his involvement in a number of "get-rich-quick" schemes that promised high returns to investors but were actually fraudulent. He used his skills as a writer and public speaker to promote these schemes and lure investors into investing their money.
In "My Adventures with Your Money," Rice describes his various schemes and the methods he used to manipulate investors. He also provides insight into the mindset of the people who invested in these schemes, many of whom were driven by greed and a desire for quick wealth.
Overall, "My Adventures with Your Money" provides a fascinating look at the history of the stock market and the culture of fraud and speculation that characterized the early years of American capitalism. It is also a cautionary tale about the dangers of investing in schemes that promise unrealistic returns
