The Golden Treasury is a distinguished anthology that meticulously curates the finest English poetry from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, showcasing the thematic richness and stylistic diversity of its era. Compiled by Francis Turner Palgrave, this seminal collection features luminaries such as Shakespeare, Milton, and Wordsworth, blending well-known masterpieces with lesser-known gems. Palgrave's thoughtful organization and commentary elevate the reading experience, inviting readers to appreciate the intricate interplay of emotion and form that defines the poetry of this golden age. The anthology reflects both the romantic and Victorian sensibilities of its time, presenting a vibrant spectrum of poetic voices that resonate with both beauty and profundity. Francis Turner Palgrave, a notable poet and critic himself, drew upon his profound appreciation for English literature and personal connections with prominent poets of his time. A former professor at both Oxford and St. Andrews, Palgrave's academic background informs his selections, embodying an intimate understanding of the literary landscape. His motivations stemmed from a desire to preserve and propagate the transcendental qualities of poetry, making relevant the cultural legacy for future generations. Lady Windermere's Fan, A Play About a Good Woman is a four-act comedy by Oscar Wilde, first produced 22 February 1892 at the St James's Theatre in London. The play was first published in 1893. Like many of Wilde's comedies, it bitingly satirizes the morals of Victorian society, particularly marriage. The story concerns Lady Windermere, who discovers that her husband may be having an affair with another woman. She confronts her husband but he instead invites the other woman, Mrs Erlynne, to his wife's birthday ball. Angered by her husband's unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere leaves her husband for another lover. Or does she? Is it really possible to trust delicious gossip? Are all men really bad? These and many other questions are raised and if not answered, then held up for public scrutiny in this biting satire of morals and proper behavior. The best known line of the play sums up the central theme: We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. —Lord Darlington (from Wikipedia and the reader)

'People say life's too short, it's not. It's too bloody long. There's too much time and too many ways to fill it, all those hours in all those days, all those choices you have to make.'
Sam's eighteen and her life's about to start. Zoe's forty-something and hers never did. They don't have much in common. Just a love of '80s new wave, and an illness that wants them dead.
Thrown together in an eating disorder unit, their most intimate secrets exposed, they form a complicated bond. But when another patient turns the ward into chaos, they're forced to confront a difficult question: if an institution is the thing keeping you safe, how are you supposed to cope when you leave?
Authentic, witty and profoundly compassionate, Laura Waldren's play Some Demon won the Papatango New Writing Prize and the Clive Richards Foundation Writer in Residence Bursary, and was first produced by Papatango Theatre Company at the Arcola Theatre, London, and Bristol Old Vic in 2024.

An irreverent and unsettling play that interrogates paranoia, ambiguity and innocence in our highly sexualised world.
Gethin has just finished his film course and reckons he's the next Scorsese. His mum is on at him to do her friend's wedding video - before the couple get divorced!
But Gethin is interested in a much more daring project - one that will get him into dangerously deep water, question his idealism and turn his life and that of his family upside down.

Natures Silken Robes :: Bombyx mandarina
This poem was inspired by a program I saw on silkworms and their germination and metamorphosis into the adult moths (which they generally never get to because of the demand for their silk).
Domesticated silk moths don't survive the silk process of obtaining their silk. The death of the silk moth is not described in this Poem. The silk worm trade has been going for over 5,000 years and cultivated mainly in Asia.
The name the 'Silk Road' came about because of this highly lucrative trade.
The domesticated silk worms are called Bombyx mori,
and their Wild cousins are called Bombyx mandarina.

Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another. Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us.

Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy.

In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades.

The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy.

Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art. Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.

In this volume we have collected verse from poets born in one of the most famous cities in the World: New York. Within its five boroughs are a small universe of wonder and magic, a kaleidoscope of almost everything the planet has to offer. In past times New York was a gateway to a new land and a new future whatever the misery and tragedy of your former life. Of course, this golden vision was not attained by everyone. But our local poets, including such luminaries as Emma Lazarus, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, Alice Duer Miller, and Alan Seeger bring vision and truth to this unrivalled city and its hallowed status in the world of verse.
