"The volume is unique in that it relates to a period about which American readers have known little."
—Boston Transcript.

"With numerous illustrations from photographs"
—A. C. McClurg & Co., Publishers.

In response to repeated requests, the compiler now presents in book form the series of legends that have been made a feature of "The Hawaiian Annual" for a number of years past. The series has been enriched by the addition of several tales, the famous shark legend having been furnished for this purpose from the papers of the Hawaiian Historical Society.

The collection embraces contributions by the Rev. A. O. Forbes, Dr. N. B. Emerson, J. S. Emerson, Mrs. E. M. Nakuina, W. M. Gibson, Dr. C. M. Hyde, and others, all of whom are recognized authorities.

The early attempts of Dibble and Pogue to gather history from Hawaiians themselves have preserved to native and foreign readers much that would probably otherwise have been lost. To the late Judge Andrews we are indebted for a very full grammar and dictionary of the language, as also for a valuable manuscript collection of meles and antiquarian literature that passed to the custody of the Board of Education.

In the first volume of Judge Fornander's elaborate work on "The Polynesian Race" he has given some old Hawaiian legends which closely resemble the Old Testament history. How shall we account for such coincidences?

***

There were native historians in those days; the newspaper articles of S. M. Kamakau, the earlier writings of David Malo, and the later contributions of G. W. Pilipo and others are but samples of a wealth of material, most of which has been lost forever to the world. From time to time Prof. W. D. Alexander, as also C. J. Lyons, has furnished interesting extracts from these and other hakus.

The Rev. A. O. Forbes devoted some time and thought to the collecting of island folk-lore: and King Kalakaua took some pains in this line also, as evidenced by his volume of "Legends and Myths of Hawaii," edited by R. M. Daggett, though there is much therein that is wholly foreign to ancient Hawaiian customs and thought. No one of late years had a better opportunity than Kalakaua toward collecting the meles, kaaos, and traditions of his race; and for purposes looking to this end there was established by law a Board of Genealogy, which had an existence of some four years, but nothing of permanent value resulted therefrom.

Fornander's manuscript collection of meles, legends, and genealogies in the vernacular has fortunately become, by purchase, the property of the Hon. C. R. Bishop, which insures for posterity the result of one devoted scholar's efforts to rescue the ancient traditions that are gradually slipping away; for the haku meles (bards) of Hawaii are gone. This fact, as also the Hawaiian Historical Society's desire to aid and stimulate research into the history and traditions of this people, strengthens the hope that some one may yet arise to give us further insight into the legendary folk-lore of this interesting race.

"Romantic Demons: Victory Over Incubus and Succubus" leads you to that shadowy world in which this line between myth and reality is blurred, and the fears of the ages come to life. Ever since the first whisper of their names, incubi and succubi have fascinated and terrified, sirenly entrapping their victims into a seductive, deadly embrace. The veil is pulled off in this book, exposing the dark truth about these nocturnal predators.
Look into the human mind, where true terror really resides. Analyze how sleep paralysis and suppressed desires result in nightmarish encounters with these demons. It is the depth of the psychology in these myths that makes them all the more real—and horrifying. And in a world infested with these demons, man has retaliated with each available weapon at his disposal. Learn about religious artifacts, charms, and modern practices designed to keep these nightmarish beings at bay. Discover the mix of superstition and practical wisdom developed to reclaim our nights.
As the last curtain falls, reflect on the strength these myths still hold. Incubi and succubi are not just relics of those times but living testaments to humanity's darkest fears and desires. Celebrate that resilient, ingenious human spirit, which turned terror into triumph and ancient dread into a testament of survival.
"Romantic Demons: Victory Over Incubus and Succubus" is an investigation, an invitation into a world where the ancient crashes into the modern. It isn't a light passage through darkness, with high stakes and profound revelations. Will you dare to uncover the truth?

Both are based on true events that happened to Petry, a Chilean orphan who travels to Spain to find her roots. Could the race to solve a mysterious on-stage accident spell curtains for Sam, Derek, and Caitlin?
When the brothers join Caitlin and her parents on a weekend trip to the southwest Virginia town of Abingdon, they can’t wait to watch their favorite actor perform at the historic Barter Theatre. But in the middle of a performance of Red Riding Hood, something goes terribly wrong.
When the theater is shut down, the kids must get to the bottom of a sinister plot. What’s the connection to the threatening letters? Was it the ghost of Robert Porterfield, who opened the Barter back in 1933 when he offered shows to local patrons in exchange for produce? Is the Martha Washington Inn, the Civil War–era hotel across the street, really haunted? Do wolves still roam The Virginia Creeper Trail, where Daniel Boone’s hunting party was attacked in 1760?
Secrets from the past are hiding just off stage in the shadows. Can the kids uncover the truth before the theater’s final act, or will their names be next on the hit list?
Danger on the Stage is the eleventh book in The Virginia Mysteries series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. The story is the perfect complement to social studies units, field trips, and family vacations related to southwest Virginia, early American pioneer Daniel Boone, The Virginia Creeper and Appalachian Trails, theater, trains, forestry, and more.
If you enjoy mystery and adventure like the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Magic Tree House, or National Treasure, you’ll love author Steven K. Smith’s exciting middle-grade series. The stories are modern-day fictional mysteries with twists of real locations and events from history. These fast-paced books are popular with both boys and girls ages 7-12, appealing to even reluctant readers!
