Sinopse

A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents: James Buchanan presents a comprehensive anthology of the political philosophy, policies, and significant events of Buchanan's presidency (1857-1861). Written in a formal, historical style, the collection emphasizes primary source documents that illuminate the challenges faced by Buchanan during a tumultuous pre-Civil War era. This compilation includes inaugural addresses, state of the union messages, and letters that provide valuable context about the nation'Äôs divisive issues, including slavery and states' rights. The literary style is characterized by its somber, reflective tone, accurately mirroring the weight of the decisions that would shape America'Äôs trajectory. James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, has often been critiqued for his perceived indecisiveness and ineffective leadership in the lead-up to the Civil War. His background as a lifelong politician, diplomat, and lawyer informs the breadth of his writings. Facing deepening national discord, Buchanan sought to maintain the Union while grappling with both internal strife and external pressures, elements that obviously energize his communications within this compilation. This book is recommended for historians, political science students, and anyone interested in the detailed study of American presidential history. Through Buchanan's own words, readers gain unique insights into the complexities of governance during one of America's most critical periods, making it an essential addition to any scholarly collection.

Cynicism, as a philosophical movement, originated in ancient Greece during the 4th century BCE. It emerged in response to the growing complexity of Greek social and political life, which many perceived as rife with corruption and moral decay. The movement sought to critique and challenge these structures through a radical reevaluation of values. The term "Cynicism" itself derives from the Greek word kynikos, meaning "dog-like," a reflection of the movement's provocative and unconventional practices, often likened to the traits of a dog—independent, shameless, and straightforward.
The seeds of Cynicism were planted by Antisthenes, a devoted student of Socrates. Rejecting the materialism and social constructs of his time, Antisthenes advocated for a life rooted in virtue as the highest good. He proposed that virtue was attainable through rigorous self-discipline and liberation from societal expectations. In his view, wealth, power, and social status were distractions that led individuals away from true happiness. Antisthenes' emphasis on asceticism laid the groundwork for Cynicism's core principles.
Diogenes of Sinope, the most iconic figure in Cynicism, brought the philosophy to life through his dramatic and often confrontational actions. Renowned for his extreme asceticism, he discarded conventional comforts and famously lived in a large ceramic jar, owning only a few possessions. Diogenes used his lifestyle as a form of social critique, questioning the moral foundations of his contemporaries. His legendary act of walking through the city with a lit lantern during the day, claiming to search for an honest man, remains a potent symbol of his scorn for societal hypocrisy and moral pretense. Diogenes embodied the Cynic ideal: a life of radical honesty, self-sufficiency, and rejection of superficial values.

    The Investiture Controversy -...

The Investiture Controversy, one of the most defining struggles of the medieval period, had its roots in the growing tension between the secular rulers of Europe and the spiritual authority of the Church. This conflict emerged in a time when power structures were deeply intertwined, and the boundaries between church and state were neither clear nor firmly established. At the heart of the controversy was the question of who held the authority to appoint, or "invest," bishops and abbots—the emperor or the pope.
The Church had grown significantly in power and influence during the early Middle Ages, accumulating wealth, land, and political clout. By the 11th century, popes were increasingly assertive, seeking to reform the Church and free it from secular interference. The papacy, under reform-minded leaders, aimed to elevate the moral and spiritual authority of the Church above that of earthly rulers. This push was partly a response to widespread abuses, such as simony—the buying and selling of church offices—and lay investiture, where secular leaders granted religious titles and symbols of office to church officials.
On the other side, the Holy Roman Emperors viewed themselves as divinely appointed protectors of Christendom. They believed it was their right and duty to appoint bishops within their realms, not just as spiritual leaders but also as loyal administrators of imperial lands. In many parts of the empire, bishops held significant secular power and governed vast territories, making their appointment a matter of political importance as much as religious concern. For emperors like Henry IV, relinquishing control over these appointments threatened to weaken imperial unity and reduce their ability to govern effectively.

Cairo, 1942: If you had asked a British officer who Colonel Clarke was, they would have been able to point him out. Always ready with a drink and a story, Clarke was a well-known figure in Cairo social circles and nightlife. If you then asked what he did, you would have less success. Those who knew didn't tell—and almost no one really knew at all.

Clarke thought of himself as developing a new kind of weapon. Its components? Rumor, stagecraft, a sense of fun. Its target? The mind of Erwin Rommel, Hitler's greatest general. Throughout history, military commanders have sought to mislead their opponents. Dudley Clarke set out to do it on a scale no one had imagined before. Even afterwards, almost no one understood the magnitude of his achievement.

Drawing on recently released documents and hugely expanding on the louche portrait of Clarke as seen in SAS: Rogue Warriors, journalist and historian Robert Hutton reveals the amazing story of Clarke's "A Force," the invention of the SAS and the Commandos, and the masterful hoodwinking of the Desert Fox at the battle of El Alamein. The Illusionist tells for the first time the dazzling tale of how, at a pivotal moment in the war, British eccentricity and imagination combined to thwart the Nazis and save innumerable lives—on both sides.
