The Hobo: The Sociology Of The Homeless Man is a book written by Nels Anderson, which provides a comprehensive sociological study of the homeless population in America during the early 20th century. The book explores the lives and experiences of ""hobos"" - a term used to describe homeless men who traveled from place to place in search of work - and sheds light on the social and economic factors that led to their homelessness.Anderson's research is based on his own experiences living among the homeless population, as well as interviews with hundreds of hobos across the country. He examines the unique culture and social structures that developed within the hobo community, including their codes of conduct, language, and customs. The book also delves into the larger societal issues that contributed to the rise of homelessness during this time period, such as the Great Depression, industrialization, and the decline of traditional forms of work. Anderson argues that the hobo lifestyle was a response to these larger societal changes, and that understanding the hobo subculture is crucial to understanding the broader social and economic forces at play.Overall, The Hobo: The Sociology Of The Homeless Man is a groundbreaking work that provides a nuanced and empathetic look at the lives of homeless men during a tumultuous period in American history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the sociology of homelessness, as well as anyone interested in the history of American society and culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. "Slobodchikoff's ground-breaking research" (Jonathan Balcombe) shows us that animals have much to teach us about languageGroundbreaking research has been done teaching animals human language, but what about the other way around? Studies have shown that lizards, squid, monkeys, and birds are talking to each other, communicating information about food, predators, squabbles, and petty jealousies. These animal languages are unique and highly adaptive. By exploring them, we come to appreciate the basis of our own languages; understanding or even "speaking" them allows us to get closer to the other species who inhabit this planet with us. The implications of animals having language are enormous. It has been one of the last bastions separating "us" from "them."Slobodchikoff's studies of the communication system of prairie dogs over twenty-five years have attracted a considerable amount of attention from the media, including a one-hour documentary on his work produced by BBC and Animal Planet. In Chasing Doctor Dolittle, he posits that the difference is one of degree, not the vast intellectual chasm that philosophers have talked about for millennia. Filled with meticulous research, vivid examples and daring conclusions, this book will challenge the reader's assumptions and open up new possibilities of understanding our fellow creatures.

    Time's Second Arrow - Evolution...

Of the codified laws of nature, only one inscribes a direction to time: the dreaded second law of thermodynamics, which declares that the disorder of a closed system tends to increase as time passes. New shoes eventually scuff, our bodies weaken and die. Yet our senses tell us that miraculous order constantly emerges, too: children grow and learn; spontaneous patterns manifest in murmurations of starlings. Can it be true that the laws of our universe mandate only dissolution?

In Time's Second Arrow, star scientists Robert M. Hazen and Michael L. Wong overturn more than a century of scientific canon, arguing that there must be a second "arrow of time"—a missing law of nature that explains how the marvelously complex constituents of our universe came to be. Evolution, they propose, is a universal phenomenon—not only in biology, but in the entire atomic, chemical, mineral, and physical universe. Showing how a natural process of selection for increasing function has shaped the universe, they explore how this new law could possibly help us identify life on other planets and understand the purpose and meaning of life on Earth in a new way.

Time's Second Arrow reveals how our cosmic inheritance includes a drive toward wondrous invention and progress—ultimately revising our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
