A man mourning his alcoholic father faces a choice: whether to pay tribute, lay scorn upon him, or pour a drink. A wrenching, dazzling, revelatory debut. Weaving between preparations for his father’s funeral and memories of life on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, Obed Silva chronicles his father’s alcoholism—a lifelong love that ended only at his death at the age of forty-eight, having poisoned himself one Carta Blanca at a time. Addiction respects no borders; the havoc Silva’s father wreaked on his family not only followed them north, where mother and son moved to escape his violent drunken rages, but would make itself felt even from the grave. With a wry cynicism; a profane, profound anger; an antic, brutally honest voice; and a hard-won classical frame of reference, Silva channels the heartbreak of mourning while wrestling with the resentment and frustration resulting from addiction. The Death of My Father the Pope is a fluid and dynamic combination of memoir and examination of the power of language—and the introduction of a unique and powerful literary voice.Ver livro
Tim Cahill's adventures typically include equal parts farce and discovery. "Cahill Among The Ruins of Peru" is no exception. Here Cahill sets out to find undiscovered pre-Incan ruins in northeatern Peru. Oily beaueaucrats, superstitious locals, a know-it-all companion and the Peruvian wilderness did not daunt him. Though they were annoying. This selection is part of the full length audiobook, "Explore: Stories of Survival From Off The Map." Tim Cahill (born in 1943) is a fount of arcane information and a master of self-deprecating humor. Gary Telles has been narrating audiobooks for the past ten years. A veteran stage actor, he has performed classical, contemporary and original theatre across the country, in addition to appearing on television, radio and CD-ROM.Ver livro
Hailed as one of the most important works on the Hitler period, this is an "astonishing, compelling, and unnerving" portrait of life in Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1944—from a man who nearly shot Hitler himself (The New Yorker). Friedrich Reck might seem an unlikely rebel against Nazism. Not just a conservative but a rock-ribbed reactionary, he played the part of a landed gentleman, deplored democracy, and rejected the modern world outright. To Reck, the Nazis were ruthless revolutionaries in Gothic drag, and helpless as he was to counter the spell they had cast on the German people, he felt compelled to record the corruptions of their rule. The result is less a diary than a sequence of stark and astonishing snapshots of life in Germany between 1936 and 1944. We see the Nazis at the peak of power, and the murderous panic with which they respond to approaching defeat; their travesty of traditional folkways in the name of the Volk; and the author's own missed opportunity to shoot Hitler. This riveting book is not only, as Hannah Arendt proclaimed it, "one of the most important documents of the Hitler period," but a moving testament of a decent man struggling to do the right thing in a depraved world.Ver livro
The titanic task demanded such character and moral courage from the naval staff in general, and Lieutenant Rios in particular, to allow them to face the challenge successfully. Naval rescuers Rios and Roblero's spirit and their proactive attitude were quickly appreciated and assessed not only by myself, but also everyone who witnessed their conduct during the demanding and arduous training to which they were subjected by the rescuers' team leader, Ovidio Rodriguez, Codelco; as well as their professional work with the miners 620 meters deep. // Finally, such qualities and performance in the rescue would make naval rescuer Rios worthy of the Medal of Bravery awarded by the President of the Republic, in Valparaiso, on May 21st, 2011. While reading the book Chile 33: Memories of a Rescuer by Lieutenant Roberto Rios Seguel, you will get to know both the man and the spirit of service to the institution he belongs to and surely you will share in my satisfaction of having met him.Ver livro
For more than fifty years, Bette Midler has been at the center of the entertainment world as a uniquely talented singer, actress, and comedienne. Starting in the unlikely venue of a gay bathhouse in New York City--where she developed her Divine Miss M persona--this book takes a deep dive into her successes, from movies to million-selling records, from sell-out concert tours to her memorable farewell to Johnny Carson as his last guest on The Tonight Show. On Bette Midler features performance analysis and deeply researched background information, all of it supporting informed--and divinely opinionated--consideration of Midler the artist. It judges her work by the highest standards: those she established for herself.Ver livro
I am one of the many admirers of Shakespeare's genius. I have even written a book about his unique ability to remain relevant to our contemporary concerns. The work was titled The Modernity of Shakespeare1 and it was very well received, and even earned a very laudatory foreword by W ole Soyinka, Nobel laureate in Literature, and professor of English literature. So it is no surprise that when I founded the New Library of Alexandria in Egypt, I also organized an annual Shakespeare event - usually organized on the 23rd of April if at all possible - in which many eminent literary critics participated. And as we focused on the plays rather than the long poems or the sonnets, some actors and occasionally cinematographers also participated. Students from the departments of English in many universities across Egypt, also invariably participated. At that annual event I usually presented a special lecture on Shakespeare. This went on for almost 15 years.Ver livro
