  Robert Barr (September 16, 1849-October 21, 1912) was a Scottish Canadian short story writer and novelist born in Glasgow, Scotland. After moving to London in the 1890s, Barr became a prolific author, publishing a book a year, primarily in the crime genre. 
  Charles Hammond has read dozens of audio programs and provided the voiceover narration for three major documentary films. He is a resident of Liverpool, England.

  Algernon Blackwood - A Short...

  Algernon Blackwood was born on 14th March 1869 in Shooter’s Hill, South East London, to a religious middle-class family. His mother was a widowed Duchess and his father was a Post Office administrator.  
   
  Blackwood was interested in the paranormal and the supernatural at an early age, and had a thirst for anything on Buddhism, other Oriental philosophies, mysticism and occultism.  In his writings the weaving of the supernatural into his various works, from ghost stories and children’s stories to plays and long novels is clearly seen, his writings beautifully enriched by his long and diversified life experience.  
   
  After leaving university and visiting parts of Europe, mainly Switzerland, the young writer went to Canada and the United States where he took on jobs including work as a farmer, a bartender, a secretary, a journalist, a reporter, running a hotel and teaching the violin.  He was voracious in meeting new people and absorbing new ideas.  
   
  In his late thirties, he returned to England where he published two of his supernatural stories in Pall Mall Magazine. As more of his highly entertaining stories were published so did his reputation and his bank balance.  All those years of curiosity and experiences were starting to emerge from his writing. 
   
  In 1906, ‘The Empty House & Other Ghost Stories’ was published with tremendous success.  Further volumes of short stories followed and with it a larger audience and bigger paydays. He also published children’s stories. 
   
  Blackwood also had ideas for novels and to explore on a larger canvas the paranormal world and the relationship between man and metaphysical powers including, in 1911, ‘The Centaur’.  
   
  With the outbreak of the First World War, Blackwood was assigned to British intelligence to write propaganda to support the war effort. 
   
  He was a prolific author with a quite staggering output which was also to include many plays. The exact number of his works is unknown as he would frequently write a story for a newspaper or periodical at very short notice.  
   
  In 1949, Blackwood was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his literary talents and his services during the First World War.  
   
  Algernon Blackwood died on 10th December 1951 after a series of strokes.  He was 82

  Robert William Chambers was born on 26th May 1865 in Brooklyn.  
   
  Chambers was educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and then the Art Students' League. From there he studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, and at Académie Julian, from 1886 to 1893. His illustrative work was good and displayed at the Salon from as early as 1889.  
   
  On returning to New York, he sold illustrations to Life, Truth, and Vogue magazines. His career then took a dramatic turn for reasons that are not entirely clear.  His new expression was in writing. He had written his first novel in 1887 ‘In the Quarter’ and felt that was where his time would now be best spent. 
   
  His best-known work is ‘The King in Yellow’ (1895), a highly vivid collection of Art Nouveau short stories. These stories are woven together by the theme of a fictitious drama of the same title, which drives those who read it insane.  
   
  This classic of Weird fiction was a genre he would return to again in several short story collections during his career.  
   
  Chambers was also a writer of historical fiction and wrote many, including a trilogy of novels, set during the earlier Franco-Prussian War. 
   
  Robert W. Chambers died on 16th December 1933, three days after intestinal surgery. 
   
  ‘The Repairer of Reputations’ from ‘The King in Yellow’ is a mind-bending and disruptive story that adds just enough reality that the unreal elements seem totally at home in the descent to chaos.

  EDGAR ALLAN POE, is considered the greatest of all writers of macabre stories, was born in Boston, Massachesetts, in 1809. His father, an Irish-American actor, died the following year, and his mother, an English actress, the year after, in Richmond, Virginia. John Allan, a wealthy Richmond merchant, adopted him. When he was 7, the Allans moved to England, sending him to school at Stoke Newington, at age 12 they moved back to Richmond. He wanted to become a writer, but John Allan wanted him to become a lawyer. He failed to finish courses at the University of Virginia and at West Point Military Academy, and John Allan disowned him. Struggling to live by his writing, he became an ill-paid magazine writer, and at 26 married Virginia, the daughter of his aunt, Mrs Clemm, aged 14. They were happy together, and while married he wrote much of his best work. But Virginia contracted tuberculosis, and worry over her illness and their poverty led him to drink heavily. After six years of marriage, she died. Suffering a complete breakdown, he was nursed back to health by Mrs Clemm. Returning to Richmond, he made a determined attempt to give up drinking. In 1849 he got engaged to a Richmond woman he had loved in his youth. Travelling north to collect Mrs Clemm to the wedding, he stopped off in Baltimore, Ohio. Found there lying drunk on a pavement, he was taken to hospital, but died a few hours later. His poems and short stories have influenced scores of writers. He invented the modern detective story, and his tales of terror are as chilling and powerful today as they have ever been.  The stories in this volume are The Tell Tale Heart, Hop Frog and The Premature Burial .  BILL WALLIS plays the title role in the BBC Radio comedy series WINSTON, and performed in the satirical series WEEK ENDING. On stage he appeared in the satirical West End show, MRS WILSON’s DIARY.
