Sinopsis

Upton Sinclair: 29 Books in One Volume presents a comprehensive anthology of the multifaceted works of a literary titan and social reformer. This collection showcases Sinclair's incisive narrative style, marked by vivid depictions and penetrating social commentary, which reveal the intersection between personal struggles and systemic injustices. From the searing expose of the meatpacking industry in "The Jungle" to the trenchant critiques of capitalism in "Oil!" and his exploration of societal issues through various genres, this volume reflects the historical and socio-political landscapes of early 20th-century America, amplifying Sinclair's commitment to progressive reform. Upton Sinclair's remarkable career spanned several decades during which he witnessed the tumult of industrialization and its repercussions on workers' rights and public health. Driven by his socialism and fervent belief in the power of literature as a tool for change, Sinclair sought to illuminate the harsh realities of his time. His upbringing and diverse experiences—ranging from his education at the prestigious Harvard University to his engagements in labor movements—deeply influenced his writing, propelling him to blend literary artistry with indignant activism. This anthology is an essential read for those interested in American literature and social change. Sinclair's works not only chronicle historical injustices but also provoke critical thought about enduring issues in contemporary society. Readers will find themselves enlightened, challenged, and motivated to reflect on the world around them, making this a vital addition to any literati's bookshelf.

A noted neuroscientist reveals groundbreaking research on how fitness and exercise can combat mental health conditions such as anxiety, dementia, ADHD, and depression, and offers a plan for improving focus, creativity, and sleep.
Jennifer Heisz shares paradigm-shifting research on how exercise affects the brain, finding that intervals of intense workouts, or even leisurely walks, help stop depression and dementia, lessen anxiety and ADHD, and encourage better sleep, creativity, and resilience. Physical inactivity is the greatest risk factor contributing to dementia and anxiety—it’s as much a factor as genetics. In addition, exercise’s anti-inflammatory properties make it the most effective treatment strategy for those who are depressed and don’t respond to anti-depressants. The book focuses on overcoming inertia; using exercise to help fight addictions; how we can improve our memory with fitness even as we age; and, importantly, how exercise can help us sleep better, improve focus, and be more creative. Included are easy to use plans for unique aerobic and resistance workouts designed to strengthen the brain.

While compiling and narrating these speeches, I've often been struck by how easily they could be translated into a modern day context. Frequently, a speech has reminded me of the news of the day, somewhere in the world. Nowhere has this been more evident than in these speeches. Given over two thousand years ago, every single one could be applied to situations and people today with barely any revision. The late republic (from about 133BCE) was characterized by civil discontent, with three Servile Wars, two attempted coups, a Social War between Rome and Italian allies, and endless conflict. We begin in 110-106BCE with two speeches railing against the fixed social order and corruption of the highborn, as well as the scorn poured on those of lower birth. We then jump to the Cataline Conspiracy in 63 BCE, an attempt to overthrow the Senate that was only defeated at great cost, and continued to be a symbol of Rome’s troubles. Here we see Cataline exhorting his troops, Cato arguing for harsh punishment, C icero calling Cataline every contemptible name under the sun, and the only known speech of Julius Caesar, in which he argues for a sensible and jurisprudential response to this great crime.Cicero’s leadership of Rome is then documented, covering the beliefs and actions that saw him exiled and then returned to power by the Senate. Finally, we have Mark Antony’s hagiographic oration of Julius Caesar, and then two speeches of Cicero’s railing against the perversion of Caesar’s legacy that Mark Antony was putting into practice, and the need to hold onto tradition for the right reasons, not simply to cover the misdeeds of politicians. Antony became Consul in this time, and Cicero saw in him the final downfall of the republic, which lasted for only seventeen years after this moment before becoming an Empire.

Homeschooling your children can be a compelling experience that will shape them in powerful and lasting ways. It’s a choice that allows you to create a learning environment where your children feel safe, respected, encouraged, and valued. It also allows them to explore their interests more deeply while enabling you to introduce them to subjects of your choosing and safeguard them from the biases of the public school system.

When you think of 'gambling' you might think of Vegas casinos, betting shops and football flutters but the risk of gambling is embedded in numerous corners of popular culture that many of us consume.
By considering the concept of 'soft gambling', No Dice asks how we could possibly link the Pokémon Trading Card Game with gambling. Can we compare Netflix to a night at the theatre? When does fictional gambling within video games go too far with their infamous loot boxes? Does such risk affect everyone or are socio-economic divides driving further inequality?
No Dice explores the messy world of gambling and risk that we encounter regularly, from childhood through adulthood, considering if it is worth the risk and if we even know what risks we might be taking.
