Summary

A collection of 15 guided walking tours of the ancient Latin descriptions found throughout Rome. Rome’s oldest known Latin inscription dates from the sixth century BC; the most recent major specimen was mounted in 2006—a span of more than two and a half millennia. Remarkably, many of these inscriptions are still to be found in situ, on the walls, gates, temples, obelisks, bridges, fountains, and churches of the city. Classicist Tyler Lansford has collected some 400 of these inscriptions and arranged them—with English translations—into fifteen walking tours that trace the physical and historical contours of the city. Each itinerary is prefaced by an in-depth introduction that provides a survey of the history and topography of the relevant area of the city. The Latin texts appear on the left-hand page with English translations on the right. The original texts are equipped with full linguistic annotation, and the translations are supplemented with historical and cultural notes that explain who mounted them and why. This unique guide will prove a fascinating and illuminating companion for both sophisticated visitors to the Eternal City and armchair travelers seeking a novel perspective into Rome's rich history.“This book is wonderful. . . . Lansford’s evocative depictions of monuments, cityscape, and memorable humans have inspired me anew with the fascination of Rome.” —Mary T. Boatwright, Duke University“If this book is not slipped into many a Rome-bound suitcase, there is no justice in the world. I can think of few more enjoyable companions on a prowl through the city.” —Jane Stevenson, Times Literary Supplement (UK)

Costello wants to become a dramatic actor from Brazil...another Carmen Veranda! Bob Matthews (an ex-aerial gunner) sings for the first time on the show (and sounds like an off-key Mel Torme).

Despite the howling protests from his peers, no one's ever been more willing to spill the beans on what it's really like inside the pro cycling peloton than the sarcastic scribe Phil Gaimon. Building on the outrageous success of his hilarious 2014 debut, Pro Cycling on $10 a Day: From Fat Kid to Euro Pro, Gaimon gathers the absolute gems from his monthly Q&A feature column in VeloNews magazine into his new book, Ask a Pro, adding a dose of fresh commentary and even more acerbic and sharp-eyed insights. With six years of material to work with-including his incredible rise into the pro ranks, the devastating loss of his contract for 2015, and his bold return to the Big League-Gaimon covers every possible topic, from the team dinner table to the toilet, with plenty of stops along the way.Gaimon wields his outsider's wit to cast a cock-eyed gaze at the peculiar manners, mores, and traditions that make the medieval sport of cycling so irresistible to watch. Ask a Pro includes new resources from Gaimon, too, including dubious advice on winning the race buffet, a cautionary guide for host housing, and Phil's pre-race warm-up routine.

35 beautiful knitting designs, ranging from a simple wrap in chunky yarn for beginners to a lightweight lace evening shawl for experienced knitters.

There's simply nothing more versatile than knitted shawls. They can be lacy or chunky, bright or neutral, cabled or just plain garter stitch, but they are always stylish, useful, and perfect for when you need a little extra warmth. Laura Strutt has designed 35 beautiful shawls and wraps, with something for everyone, from novice knitters to experts. Divided into Bright and Beautiful, Warm and Rich, and Neutral and Natural shades, the patterns use a complete rainbow of colours, including variegated yarns. The stitch patterns are just as diverse, with textured triangles, beaded lace stitches, and overlapping 'waves'. Start with a beautifully warm garter stitch wrap in a cool glacier blue – quick to knit even for a beginner – or a rainbow-striped triangular shawl. Then try a fashionable ombré-shaded shawl with an eyelet pattern, or a grey and white monochrome shawl with a bright contrast edging. For more experienced knitters, there are larger projects such as the brioche-stitch shawl, or the feather and fan stitch wrap in a variegated silk-based yarn. Whether you are knitting a cover-up for yourself, or a gift for a friend or family member, you will be spoilt for choice with these beautiful designs.
