‘You are trying to survive, shirt torn, arse out of your pants, whiskers a mile long, hungry … you carry your boots because there’s no skin on your feet. But when you look around at some of the others – hell! They look crook! … you dig a number of holes in the ground and bury your dead. Nothing would be said, but you think ‘maybe it will be my turn next’.
Within 24 hours of the Japanese invasion of northern New Guinea at Gona in July 1942, the Australian militiamen of ‘B’ Company, 39th Battalion, spent four weeks fighting a delaying action against a crack Japanese force outnumbered by three to one. By mid-August, the rest of the battalion had arrived, and these men took up a position at Isurava, in the heart of the cloud covered mountains and jungles of the Owen Stanley Range.
The battle for Isurava would be the defining battle of the Kokoda Campaign and has rightfully been described as Australia’s Thermopylae. It was here that Australia’s first Victoria Cross in the Pacific war was awarded when the Japanese conducted several ferocious attacks against the Australian perimetre.
The outnumbered and poorly equipped Australians managed to hold back the Japanese advance for almost a week; only then did these battle scared and weary men begin a month long fighting withdraw towards Ioribaiwa Ridge just north of Port Morsby. However, their sacrifice provided time for the Australian 25th Brigade to be brought forward — finally forcing the Japanese to withdrawal just as they glimpsed the lights of Port Morseby.
Using diaries, letters and other first-hand accounts and following on from The Battles for Kokoda Plateau, leading military historian David W Cameron continues his detailed and riveting account of the war in the Owen Stanleys in 1942.

Certain foreign policy decisions led to continuing enmity between Carthage and the burgeoning power of Rome, and what followed was a series of wars which turned from a battle for Mediterranean hegemony into an all-out struggle for survival. Although the Romans gained the upper hand in the wake of the First Punic War, Hannibal brought the Romans to their knees for over a decade during the Second Punic War. While military historians are still amazed that he was able to maintain his army in Italy near Rome for nearly 15 years, scholars are still puzzled over some of his decisions, including why he never attempted to march on Rome in the first place.
Cannae is still considered one of the greatest tactical victories in the history of warfare, and the fact the battle was a complete victory resulting in the wholesale annihilation of the enemy army made it the textbook example for military commanders to try to duplicate. Of course, others usually were unsuccessful. Cannae was the kind of complete victory that every commander from Caesar to Frederick the Great to Napoleon to Robert E. Lee sought, and that few generals save Caesar and Napoleon bagged whole armies is a testament to the near impossibility of achieving a victory like Cannae.
On October 19, 202 BCE, on the plain of Zama in modern Tunisia, battle was joined, and for the first time in one of the battles of the Second Punic War, Hannibal had the infantry advantage and Rome had the cavalry advantage. The result would decide the fate of the Second Punic War and the course of history.
Not surprisingly, after the serious threat Hannibal posed during the Second Punic War, the Romans didn’t wait much longer to take the fight to the Carthaginians in the Third Punic War, which ended with Roman legions smashing Carthage to rubble. As legend has it, the Romans literally salted the ground upon which Carthage stood to ensure its destruction once and for all.

Adoption is a profound and life-altering experience, one that reshapes the lives of both children and parents. It is a journey that begins with the desire to provide a child with the safety, love, and support they need to grow, while also offering parents the opportunity to nurture and build a family. Adoption is unique because it is not just a legal process, but an emotional and relational journey that involves new beginnings, hopes, and dreams for the future.
For adoptive parents, the decision to adopt can be filled with excitement, but also with uncertainty and challenges. The process itself can be complex, involving a range of legal, emotional, and logistical steps. It requires careful preparation, openness to learning, and a deep understanding of the child’s needs, which may include navigating loss, identity, and the need for belonging. Adoptive parents often face questions about how to best bond with their child, how to create a secure and nurturing environment, and how to build a lasting and trusting relationship.
For the child, adoption is a journey of its own. It involves the experience of joining a new family, which may include adjustments to a new home, new caregivers, and, in some cases, a new culture or environment. Children may struggle with feelings of loss or confusion, and the process of building trust and attachment can take time. However, with the right guidance, care, and patience, adoption can also provide children with a fresh start—an opportunity to experience love, stability, and the sense of belonging that every child deserves.

There are countless examples of battles that take place in wars after a peace treaty is signed. The last battle of the Civil War was a skirmish in Texas that Confederate forces won, nearly a month after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. As fate would have it, the last fighting of the Civil War took place two days after Confederate President Jefferson Davis had been captured in Georgia
It’s certainly rare for the most famous battle of a war to take place after the peace treaty is signed, but luckily for Andrew Jackson, the War of 1812 was that unique exception. Less than a year after his victory in the Battle of Horseshoe Creek, Jackson led his forces into a more important battle at the Battle of New Orleans. The British hoped to grab as much of the land on the western frontier as they could, especially New Orleans, which had a prominent position on the Mississippi River for trading. With more than 8,000 soldiers aboard a British fleet sailing in from Jamaica in early January 1815, the attack on New Orleans promised to be a significant one, while Jackson’s men defended New Orleans with about half that number. This went on despite the fact that the two sides had signed the Treaty of Ghent on Christmas Eve 1814, which was supposed to end the war.
Despite the fact the French & Indian War had recently concluded, Pontiac led the first major attack of Pontiac’s War in May 1763, when he and 300 of his men attacked Fort Detroit in what is now the city by the same name. Unfortunately for his cause, Pontiac failed to gauge just how strong the British presence there was, and his attack was quickly repelled. On the other hand, he was not a man who gave up easily, so instead of retreating, he and his warriors would lay siege to the British stronghold. In the days that followed, word spread of his efforts, and in short order nearly 1,000 men from various tribes in the area had joined him.

In a world where psychological well-being is paramount, understanding the nuances of manipulative behaviors is crucial. One of the most insidious forms of manipulation is gaslighting. This chapter delves deep into the definition of gaslighting, aiming to equip you with the knowledge to identify and protect yourself from this covert form of emotional abuse.
    What is Gaslighting?
Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or a group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group, making them question their own memory, perception, or judgment. It often leads to significant emotional distress, confusion, and a diminished sense of self-worth in the victim.
    The Core Elements of Gaslighting
-Doubt: The manipulator's primary tool is doubt. By questioning the validity of the victim's memories or perceptions, the manipulator creates uncertainty.
-Denial: Despite evidence to the contrary, the gaslighter will deny behaviors or events, further confusing the victim.
-Discredit: The gaslighter may also discredit the victim to others, isolating the victim and undermining their support system.
-Dependency: Over time, the victim may become dependent on the gaslighter for their version of reality, eroding the victim's ability to trust their own judgment.
