Tom Cruise, born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, is an American actor and producer regarded as a Hollywood icon. His films have grossed over $12 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing actors of all time. Cruise began acting in the early 1980s, achieving breakthrough roles in Risky Business and Top Gun. He has received numerous accolades, including three Golden Globe Awards and an Honorary Palme d'Or. Cruise is also known for his action film roles in the Mission: Impossible series, often performing his own stunts. Outside of acting, Cruise is an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology.

Cruise attended fifteen schools in fourteen years. He spent part of his childhood in Canada when his father worked as a defense consultant. 
  
He briefly attended a Catholic seminary with aspirations of becoming a Franciscan priest before leaving after a year. He was also cut from his high school football team for drinking beer.
