A searing, historically rich account of how US policing and punishment have been retrofitted over the last four decades to extract public and private revenues from America’s poorest and most vulnerable communities.

Alongside the rise of mass incarceration, a second profound and equally disturbing development has transpired. Since the 1980s, US policing and punishment have been remade into tools for stripping resources from the nation’s most oppressed communities and turning them into public and private revenues. Legal Plunder analyzes this development’s origins, operations, consequences, and the political struggles that it has created.

Drawing on historical and contemporary evidence, including original ethnographic research, Joshua Page and Joe Soss examine the predatory dimensions of criminal legal governance to show how practices that criminalize, police, and punish have been retrofitted to siphon resources from subordinated groups, subsidize governments, and generate corporate profits. As tax burdens have declined for the affluent, this financial extraction—now a core function of the country’s sprawling criminal legal apparatus—further compounds race, class, and gender inequalities and injustices. Legal Plunder shows that we can no longer afford to overlook legal plunder or the efforts to dismantle it.

In "Redesigning Education: A New Paradigm for Success," author Frank "Bud" O'Lery presents a compelling exploration of the challenges facing humanity in the modern era. Drawing parallels to the metaphorical "Four Horsemen of Apocalypse," O'Lery delves into the pressing issues of overcrowding, authoritarianism, greed, and environmental crises. Urging immediate action, he proposes the establishment of Educational Oases as safe havens for humanity, fostering critical thinking, knowledge, and interpersonal skills. The book envisions these Oases as fortresses of enlightenment, safeguarding arts, knowledge, and the best of human values. O'Lery contends that survival in the face of global challenges necessitates a commitment to logic, evidence, and the sanctity of life. Drawing inspiration from the concept of "the shining city on the hill," the author advocates for a new educational paradigm that addresses societal flaws and cultivates a foundation for future generations. "Redesigning Education" serves as both a discussion and a plan of action, providing a roadmap for navigating troubled times and reshaping the future of humanity.

The novel is set in Los Angeles and follows a tenacious inner-city teen who is eventually a victim of many of the social evils that plague children in many low-income neighborhoods. In his once happy family, he experienced love and grief, as well as violence, betrayal, and separation. His father's death, through a series of terrible events, becomes his breaking point, forcing him into homelessness and dangerous street life.

The youngster succumbs to street life and is exposed to infamous gangsters who initiate him and take advantage of his yearning for parental supervision, financial security, and a safe haven from the awful realities of his soul. The teenager leads a risky life and eventually ends up in prison, where he is forced to survive prison life among inmates who are far more dangerous.

He sees a profitable opportunity to sell coffee to other inmates as a result of the desperate demand for food in prison. This commodity allows him to earn money while also allowing him to socialize with other inmates from all walks of life. It also provides him with a platform to learn and surround himself with self-proclaimed scholars and intellectuals who eventually bring him to spiritual enlightenment, changing the course of his destiny for the better.

As more and more people align themselves with the Palestinian people, Palestine in a World on Fire provides the global perspective and analysis needed to inform how we forge ahead on this path of newfound solidarity. Editors Ilan Pappé and Katherine Natanel have gathered a collection of interviews that are intimate, challenging, and rigorous—many of them conducted before October 7th but still startlingly prescient. The interviewees connect the struggle for Palestinian liberation to various liberatory movements around the world, simultaneously interrogating and recontextualizing their own positions given the ongoing aggression in Palestine. This incredible group includes Angela Y. Davis, Noam Chomsky, Judith Butler, Nadine El-Enany, Gabor Mate, Mustafa Barghouti, Yanis Varoufakis, Paul Gilroy, Elias Khoury, Gayatri Spivak, and Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian.

Palestine in a World on Fire highlights the centrality of Palestine in struggles shared across the world: capitalism, imperialism, misogyny, neocolonialism, racism, and more. Each conversation tackles urgent events and unfolding dynamics, and the scholar-activists interviewed here provide invaluable perspectives and insights, illuminating the richness and relevance of recent scholarship on Palestine.
