Discover English idioms and their matching Spanish expressions in 48 memorable and cheerful illustrations.

This is not a standard textbook. It's a book for language lovers and learners who want to explore and live a language. In this book you can browse through 48 idioms, 24 English idioms and their 24 similar Spanish expressions. Each idiom also has its literal translation in the other language and is illustrated by the talented graphic artist Galih Windu.

This book is the brainchild of some friends living in Brussels. We often sat together and enjoyed the fact that languages sometimes have completely different ways to say the same thing. And Torsten Peters asked himself: Why not note this down and make funny illustrations? Language experts and -lovers will enjoy the illustrations and may still discover some new and amusing idioms. For language learners our idioms can be the key to really discover, enjoy and live the new language. And children will love the illustrations and become curious to discover languages.

Please note that the present English-Spanish version (vol. 9) is almost identical to the Spanish-English version, just the introduction is in English and not in Spanish.

    Extract from Captain...

This was the last story published by Twain, a few months before he died. The story follows Captain Elias Stormfield on his extremely long cosmic journey to heaven. It deals with the obsession of souls with the "celebrities" of heaven, like Adam and Moses, who according to Twain become as distant to most people in heaven as living celebrities are on Earth. Twain uses this story to show his view that the common conception of heaven is ludicrous and points out the incongruities of such beliefs.A lot of the description of Heaven is given by the character Sandy McWilliams, a cranberry farmer who is very experienced in the ways of heaven. The heaven described by him is similar to the conventional Christian heaven, but includes a larger version of all the locations on Earth, as well as of everywhere in the universe. Once in heaven, the person spends eternity living as he thinks best, usually according to his true (sometimes undiscovered) talent. According to one of the characters, a cobbler who "has the soul of a poet in him won't have to make shoes here", implying that he would instead turn to poetry and achieve perfection in it.As Stormfield proceeds through heaven, he learns that his pre-conceptions of "heaven" are all wrong and a good part of the fun of the tale comes from Twain's revealing the "true facts" about what heaven is and how it works. (Introduction by Wikipedia and John Greenman)

Three Men on the Bummel (1900) is a comical travelogue by Jerome K. Jerome. The three companions are on a bicycle tour through the German Black Forest. What does Bummel mean? D. C. Browning writes "The title must be puzzling to many readers, for 'bummel' will not be found in English dictionaries." You can learn it's meaning at the last chapter of the book, which is a series of humorous vignettes, each of which builds slowly, through accumulation of layer on layer of detail, through several pages. Most of them concern bicycling, genial commentary on German culture from the point of view of a British tourist, or situation-comedy-like depictions of interpersonal interactions between the characters.
