Summary

On 21 May this year, Hibs made history by winning the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1902. It was a time of celebration when the supporters revelled in their victory and remembered the great heroes of the club.

Eric Stevenson is one of those great heroes.

When he was inducted into the Hibs Hall of Fame at Easter Road in 2012, Stevenson declared, 'This means everything to me. My uncle founded the Bonnyrigg Hibs supporters club in 1949–50 and I started going to games when I was seven'. This book traces Stevenson's fanatical interest in the club from a very young age, his time as a left-winger wearing the number eleven green and white jersey in the '60s, and the well-deserved recognition that he has gained today.

Throughout his career, Stevenson also played for Hearts and Ayr United, but this story shows that ultimately he is truly Hibs Through and Through.

A contributing editor for Outside magazine provides a behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced, around-the-world sailing race.

An invigorating behind-the-scenes look at the world of extreme sailing, The Race is also a taut, engrossing account of the first running of the competition called “The Race,” which began on December 31, 2000, in Barcelona and ended sixty-two days later in Marseilles. The most intense event of its kind—a nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in the fastest boats ever built—The Race attracts some of the world’s best sailors and arguably its most eccentric personalities.

Tim Zimmermann, an experienced blue-water sailor, relates in knuckle-whitening detail how and why sailors risk millions of dollars and their lives to dash around the world in record time. He garnishes this story with a chronicle of the tumultuous history of extreme sailing from the nineteenth century to today. Zimmermann “puts the reader right on board with the tough, colorful crews as they take a crash course (sometimes literally) in how to handle these astonishing machines” (Derek Lundy, author of Godforsaken Sea).

    Praise for The Race

“Zimmerman turns a daring race of unthinkably fast, high-tech sailing machines into a page-turner.” —Bruce Knecht, author of The Proving Ground

“This is probably the finest account of the history of the circumnavigator’s quest yet written, refreshingly free of hyperbole and false expectation. Zimmerman’s pace matches that of The Race itself, though he never puts his bow under.” —Lincoln P. Paine, author of Ships of the World

“Zimmerman’s behind-the-scenes look at the characters, boats, and technology in The Race—as well as the rich sailing history that preceded it—captures the nuances of adventure only a masochist could love. The Race was a wild ride, and The Race is a fine read.” —Herb McCormick, sailing correspondent of the New York Times, editor of Cruising World

'Bowler's Name' is a tale of a life in cricket's margins. Tom Hicks is no household name, but he often rubbed shoulders with cricketing royalty, going from the village green to walking out as captain at Lord's. As an ambitious youngster, Hicks dreamed of reaching the top. But trying to make it big and balance the demands of university, family, a full-time job and a penchant for post-match fun was no easy feat. Settling for an unglamorous life as a minor county player, cricket took him to all corners of the country, and then across the globe, getting an insight into the nether regions of a cricketing world that was rapidly vanishing. Through the eyes of a cricket nut, 'Bowler's Name' takes us on a journey of success, failure, hilarity and often sheer madness. If you've ever wondered what it's like to face 90mph bowling, to have lunch with Mike Gatting or to infiltrate an England post-match party, Hicks is your man. 'Bowler's Name' is for fans of cricket idiosyncrasies, lovers of the underdog and anyone who has tried and failed.

Every week from August to January, fans across the Lone Star State—in big cities and small towns from the panhandle to the gulf coast—head to living rooms and stadiums to watch their favorite high school, college, and NFL teams battle on the field. In this engrossing chronicle, DallasCowboys.com writer Nick Eatman illuminates the heart of Texas football, following a high school team (the Plano Wildcats), a college team (the Baylor University Bears), and an NFL team (the Dallas Cowboys) through one turbulent season, blending their stories into a unique, eye-opening account of Lone Star football. Eatman tells the human stories behind the snaps and looks at the successes and heartbreaks that mark every level of the game. Following each team through the unpredictable injuries, trades, upsets, comebacks, gossip, controversies, and scandals, he captures the current football moment in America and the issues surrounding the game. Ultimately, he reveals the grit, drive, and attitude that bind and inspire these players separated by age, money, and of course talent: an abiding love for the gridiron—and a relentless drive to win.

Over eleven years and two separate managerial stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, John Gibbons endeared himself to fans with his folksy manner and his frequent battles with umpires: "Here comes Gibby!" Winning helped too. Under Gibbons's management, the Jays made the American League Championship Series in 2015, ending a twenty-two-year playoff drought; then they did it again in 2016. Along the way the team defied odds, won over a nation, and with one flip of a bat produced one of the most iconic moments in MLB history. Now, in his memoir, Gibby shares the story: an on-field career that didn't pan out, but a managing career that did . . . eventually.Raised in a military family, he played his first competitive baseball in Newfoundland and Labrador, and, with the family now in San Antonio, Texas, Gibby, a catcher, developed into a first-round draft pick of the New York Mets. While Gibbons only played eighteen major league games, he did earn a World Series ring as the 1986 Mets bullpen catcher and knew all the characters from that team, including Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Lenny Dykstra, and Gary Carter. In 1990, Gibby began his journey as a coach and manager. An old teammate, J. P. Ricciardi, hired him to work with the Jays, and he moved his way up the ranks and into the hearts of baseball fans.
