Sinopsis

It is Tom Stoppard's very special skill as the master comedian of ideas in the modern theater to create brilliant, biting humor out of serious concerns. Virtually assaulting the audience with a cascade of words and a conspicuous display of intellect, Stoppard, in "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor," contrasts the circumstances of a political prisoner and a mental patient in a Soviet insane asylum, to question the difference, if any, between free will and the freedom to conform. The situation, in which the mental patient "hears" an orchestra, is both chilling and funny as we are introduced to two men who happen to share the same name, are in carcerated in the same cell, and are attended by the same doctor.

Honest, raw and very funny, Selin Sevinç's musings on the art of screenwriting shine light on the illusive craft which plays such a pivotal role in the movie making process. Inbetween recollecting on her efforts to make unique stories in a industry seemingly interested only in identikit movies, Sevinç blends in darkly amusing tales of homelife and motherhood in Oregon, US, and reminisces on her own childhood growing up in Turkey.
In the latter chapters, Sevinç shares guidance with the reader on how to make thought-provoking and meaningful screenplays. Here the author demonstrates a deep technical knowledge of the screenwriting craft, showing us how Blake Snyder's famous Beat Sheet formula can be used creatively without sacrificing depth and originality.
The saying goes, that art reflects life. As most artists will know, the inner drive to create perfect artistic expression is both a blessing and a curse, and it has never been better articulated than here. In ADVENTURES IN SCREENWRITING, Sevinç will take you on a careering emotional joyride through her creative processes, her pitfalls and breakthroughs, where the boundaries between art and life become blurred.

The story of how English became American—and how it became Southern, Bostonian, Californian, African American, Chicano, elite, working-class, urban, rural, and everything in betweenBy the time of the Revolution, the English that Americans spoke was recognizably different from the British variety. Americans added dozens of new words to the language, either borrowed from Native Americans (raccoon, persimmon, caucus) or created from repurposed English (backwoods, cane brake, salt lick). Americans had their own pronunciations (bath rhymed with hat, not hot) and their own spelling (honor, not honour), not to mention a host of new expressions that grew out of the American landscape and culture (blaze a trail, back track, pull up stakes). Americans even invented their own slang, like stiff as a ringbolt to mean drunk. American English has continued to grow and change ever since. The United States of English tells the engrossing tale of how the American language evolved over four hundred years, explaining both how and why it changed and which parts of the "mother tongue" it preserved (I guess was heard in the British countryside long before it became a typical Americanism). Plentiful examples of the American vernacular, past and present, bring the language to life and make for an engaging as well as enlightening listen.
