Sinopse

Is your retirement plan dying in the climate wars? Are you getting on with things in the meantime? In Life expectancy begins to fall, Tom Sastry asks how we normalise an apocalypse, taking us on a tour of bad coping strategies, unwelcome epiphanies, and striking reminders of what we still have.
Part-elegy and part-satire, these poems do not show you what to do in a crisis, nor do they promote the cliches of positive thinking that tell you how to be a good worker, an effective activist or a spiritual person. Instead, quietly and persuasively, Sastry develops a subtle meditation on hope. The poetry shows us as we mostly are, lost in the enormity of it all and busy with other things. Explore a world where 'pessimism is complicated by love' and optimism is found hiding in moments where 'nothing happens, in the most lavish way'.

Poet and podcaster Jarod K. Anderson (creator of The CryptoNaturalist podcast and author of Field Guide to the Haunted Forest) celebrates the natural world with warmth and humor. The poetry and prose in this collection are love letters to impermanence, to our kinship with nature, to our strange ability to conjure meaning. Vivid and approachable, the work gathered here invites listeners to rediscover commonplace wonders and find new beauty in topics ranging from moss to mortality. The poems in this collection highlight our connection to a living universe and affirm our place in a wilderness worthy of our love.

Sir William Schwenck Gilbert was an English dramatist, librettist, poet and illustrator best known for the fourteen comic operas (known as the Savoy operas) produced in collaboration with the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan. The most famous of these include H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and one of the most frequently performed works in the history of musical theatre, The Mikado.Gilbert also wrote the Bab Ballads, an extensive collection of light verse accompanied by his own comical drawings. His creative output included over 75 plays and libretti, numerous stories, poems, lyrics and various other comic and serious pieces. His plays and realistic style of stage direction inspired other dramatists, including Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw. According to The Cambridge History of English and American Literature, Gilbert's "lyrical facility and his mastery of metre raised the poetical quality of comic opera to a position that it had never reached before and has not reached since" - Summary by Wikipedia

The Seasons is a series of four long poems in blank verse by the Scottish poet James Thomson, each poem describing one of the four seasons. The poems are replete with various scenes of nature described with loving detail, as well as Thomson's view of the proper relationship between humans and nature, which anticipates the attitudes of the Romantics. "Spring," which was published in 1728, first brought Thomson to mainstream attention. He followed it up with "Summer," "Winter," and "Autumn," publishing all four as The Seasons in 1730. It is in large part because of the reputation he garnered from the publication of The Seasons that the critic William Hazlitt called Thomson "the best and most original of our descriptive poets." The period known as the Avignon Papacy began in 1309, when Pope Clement V relocated the seat of papal power to Avignon, France. The French monarchy slowly gained control over the papacy during this time, and as they did, corruption and greed grew in the church. The troubadour and priest Raimon de Cornet staunchly opposed the Avignon Papacy for these reasons. He summarized his grievances in this noteworthy poem, in which he states, “I see the pope his sacred trust betray, / For while the rich his grace can gain alway, / His favors from the poor are aye withholden.”

'You're not stupid for wanting things to change, Fanny – it's just that we have to play the music that gets handed to us.'
Meet Fanny Mendelssohn. You'll probably know of her younger brother Felix, from nineteenth-century smash hits like 'The Wedding March'. He was such a huge star that Queen Victoria requested a private concert, during which she sang her favourite of his compositions, a song called 'Italien'.
The only problem is, that particular piece was actually composed by Fanny, though it was published under her brother's name.
When Fanny intercepts the letter inviting Felix to play for the queen, she decides to hide it away, don her brother's clothes, and take his place at the palace…
Calum Finlay's play Fanny is a joyful and irreverent comedy celebrating music, family and – at last – the work of a composer overlooked because of her sex. It opened at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury, in 2024.

This was the Weekly Poetry project for May 20, 2012.Paul Laurence Dunbar (June 27, 1872 – February 9, 1906) was an African American poet, novelist, and playwright of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Much of his popular work in his lifetime used a Negro dialect, which helped him become one of the first nationally-accepted African American writers. Much of his writing, however, does not use dialect; these more traditional poems have become of greater interest to scholars.(Summary by Wikipedia )
