Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us. 
   
  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.   
   
  In this volume we have collected verse from poets born in one of the most diverse and wide-ranging areas of the United States; the South-East.   ‘Perchance to dream’ is an offer that most of us would accept in the blink of an eye.  That mysterious ‘other world’ where the day’s reality is processed by our subconscious, really is a mystery, even to the experts and self-help books who decipher our beguiling imaginings with all sorts of reasonings.  Perhaps the better truth is that most of us don’t remember much about our dreams, unlike its near neighbour the nightmare!  Day-dreams too fall into a fantasy imagining where we try to re-route the natural course of events as we move from one emotion to another. 
   
  Our unconscious dreams seem essential for our mental and emotional well-being and some believe they provide solutions, answers and prophesize important events.  In the conscious world we use the word to describe our goals, desires and wishes which reveal much about who we are and our chosen path for life.   
   
  Whatever their significance may or may not be, they are universal and a subject on which our poets have much to say. 
   
  With such a rich seam to mine, our poets from Sarojini Naidu to Lewis Carroll, Edna St Vincent Millay to Shakespeare by way of Antonio Machado and Longfellow and a host of others provide a pillowful of poems that will set you dreaming.

  This big-hearted, irreverent queer-as-hell rom-com was first performed by Melbourne Theatre Company in 2022. A new production, directed by Clare Watson and produced by Roast Productions, was a hit at the Traverse Theatre during the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, winning a Fringe First Award, before transferring to Park Theatre, London.
