Sinopse

Inspired by our native landscapes, saturated by the shadows beneath trees and behind doors, listening to the run of water and half-heard voices, Tom Cox s first collection of short stories is a series of evocative and unsettling trips into worlds previously visited by the likes of M. R. James and E. F. Benson.
Railway tunnels, the lanes and hills of the Peak District, family homes, old stones, shreds fluttering on barbed wire, night drawing in, something that might be an animal shifting on the other side of a hedge: Tom has drawn on his life-long love of weird fiction, folklore and nature s unregarded corners to write a collection of stories that will delight fans old and new, and leave them very uneasy about turning the reading lamp off.

"Two Tales From Alfred C. Martino" includes two short stories from opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. The first, Requiem For An Athlete, is a somber look at the unfulfilled expectations of a once-great athlete. Grad School Daydreams, on the other hand, is a whimsical tale, set at a Southern California university, of a grad school student who daydreams and pines for a beautifully exotic woman sitting next to him in class.

In this classic tale, the young Puritan Goodman Brown heads into the woods for a meeting with the devil. His world turns on its head, however, when he sees who else has gathered for the satanic ceremony. This one evening will forever mar how he sees his neighbors, his family, and himself. See for yourself why Hawthorne’s chilling allegory for Puritan culture and the loss of innocence has become a staple of early American fiction.

They were watching an angry mob of grey aliens and human sympathizers. Who were trying to rip down a statue of the local hero Blue Midnight, the Emperor of the local solar system in a park.

"Let them, Gabriel, to fight them would cause them to be angrier and they will turn on us! It is only a statue It is only a symbol! It is not the man," said Lance Junior in the magician's head as he dragged the mad magician away from the place.

Edith Newbold Jones was born in New York on January 24, 1862. Born into wealth, this background of privilege gave her a wealth of experience to eventually, after several false starts, produce many works based on it culminating in her Pulitzer Prize winning novel ‘The Age Of Innocence’
Marriage to Edward Robbins Wharton, who was 12 years older in 1885 seemed to offer much and for some years they travelled extensively. After some years it was apparent that her husband suffered from acute depression and so the travelling ceased and they retired to The Mount, their estate designed by Edith. By 1908 his condition was said to be incurable and prior to divorcing Edward in 1913 she began an affair, in 1908, with Morton Fullerton, a Times journalist, who was her intellectual equal and allowed her writing talents to push forward and write the novels for which she is so well known.
Acknowledged as one of the great American writers with novels such as Ethan Frome and the House of Mirth among many. Wharton also wrote many short stories, including ghost stories and poems which we are pleased to publish.
Edith Wharton died of a stroke in 1937 at the Domaine Le Pavillon Colombe, her 18th-century house on Rue de Montmorency in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt.
