All I’d wanted for as long as I could remember was a woman to love, a soulmate to live with in contentment for the rest of my days: friend, lover, companion, mother to our children.
Time was running out: I was getting old. Next year I would be eighteen.
Barry Goldman is a sensitive boy. He’s being primed to run the family business but has discovered a talent for making audiences laugh at his silly poems.
At last, he has found something that might make him attractive to girls – in particular, Harriet Fink - but there’s not much call for delicate, earnest poets in the 1970s comedy world of hot-panted dolly birds and battle-axe mothers-in-law.
Then one night he sees Kris Dean on stage and understands that the world of comedy is about to change forever.
Stand Up, Barry Goldman – like Elena Ferrante, but with jokes - is the debut novel of David J. Cohen, stand-up comedian and writer best known as the creator of dozens of songs for multi-BAFTA winning hit TV show Horrible Histories, and less well known as lead singer in the world’s first Jewish heavy metal band, Guns’n’Moses.
"Funny and fascinating, a lovely tale." Jo Brand
"Powerfully funny, often moving... Dave has created the Jewish Adrian Mole of alternative comedy." David Quantick

I live in Springfield, Ohio. (Don't worry - my cat is safe.)
    I'm pushing thirty.
    Anndd . . . my career sucks.
On top of all that, my elderly although well-meaning landlady has made it her life's mission to make sure I walk down the aisle. But this time - she's gone too far! She rented the other side of my duplex to a guy she claims is hot eye candy, and get this: he has his own business!
Yep! He is 'The Bug Guy - Licensed to Kill.'
He and I did not get off on the right foot for a slew of reasons. But then - my 30th birthday bash happened and in a rare departure from my normal behavior, I totally lost all social inhibitions (with the help of tequila) and awoke to . . . total confusion! Did I mention I was totally naked and The Bug Guy's tee shirt was under my bed?
Just when I thought things couldn't get any weirder - well, I was proven oh-so-wrong!

Edgar Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on 19th January 1809. His father abandoned his family the following year and within a year his mother had died leaving him an orphan.
He was taken in by the Allan family but never formally adopted although he now referred to himself as Edgar Allan Poe. His father alternatively spoiled or chastised him and tension was frequent over gambling debts and monies for his education. His university years to study ancient and modern languages was cut short by lack of money and he enlisted as a private in the army claiming he was 22, it is more probable he was 18. After 2 years he obtained a discharge in order to take up an appointment at the military academy, West Point, where he failed to become an officer.
Poe had released his 1st poetry volume in 1827 and after his 3rd turned to prose and placing short stories in several magazines and journals. At age 26 he obtained a licence to marry his cousin. She was a mere 13 but they stayed together until her death from tuberculosis 11 years after.
In January 1845 ‘The Raven’ was published and became an instant classic. Thereafter followed the prose works for which he is now so rightly famed as a master of the mysterious and the macabre.
Edgar Allan Poe died at the tragically early age of 40 on 7th October 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Newspapers at the time reported Poe's death as ‘congestion of the brain’ or ‘cerebral inflammation’, common euphemisms for death from disreputable causes such as alcoholism but the actual cause of death remains a mystery.
