Sinopsis

Marlaine Dufrane knows what it’s like to feel like an outcast. She lives it every day and wishes her life would change. Especially, she wished bullies would leave her alone.

With a five hour day job after school at the local cotton and saw mill, she’s following in her parents' footsteps. Poor, overworked, underpaid, and living a hard life in 1950s Australia.

But all it takes is one bite. One bite from a rat with three legs and a stumpy tail to set her on a journey of self-discovery, confidence, and standing up for herself. It also gives her powers, like the power to hear and speak to rats, and to make them do her bidding.

When the factory manager accuses her of theft and fires not only her, but both of her parents as well, Marlaine puts in a telepathic call for revenge to her new friends living under the town. Friends in their thousands respond, especially one who is bigger than the wood cutting machine in the mill. And when he gets hungry, he needs to feed…on human flesh.

Saint Bridget of Sweden was one of the most privileged mystics in the history of the Church. Born to a wealthy family, she was given in marriage to a pious and good-hearted nobleman, with whom she raised eight children, including the future Saint Catherine of Sweden. When her husband died, Bridget founded an order of nuns, the Order of the Most Holy Savior, more commonly called the Bridgettines. She labored until her death to spread her order and boost morality and devotion in the decadent 14th-century Church. She also labored to bring the papacy back to Rome from Avignon. In all her efforts, she was wise, charitable, and outstanding in sanctity.Devout from a young age, Saint Bridget also received numerous visions of Our Lord and Our Lady, including intimate details of Our Lady's early life, the Holy Family in Nazareth, and the Passion, as well as prayers the famous 15 Prayers attributed to her, popular devotions in the late Middle Ages and our own era. The Magnificent Prayers of Saint Bridget of Sweden collects these prayers and presents them for the modern devotee.Do not miss these stirring and vivid prayers from one of the greatest foundresses and mystics of the Church's history. Imbued throughout St. Bridget's life, and thus these prayers of hers, is the undeniable spirit of piety, devotion, and saintliness that characterized her earthly life—and by which she merited to become privy to sublime mysteries. Let, then, her insights penetrate you through the recitation of these meditative orations.

While the Advent season is filled with fun and expectations, Lent can be more difficult for children. How can we help children approach this season in a way that is meaningful and not frightening?

Make Room presents Lent as a special time for creating a welcoming space for God. Other books offer excellent ideas for going through the Lenten season with children, but Make Room uniquely connects its projects to the story of Jesus. Simple and practical activities such as baking bread, having a neighbor over for dinner, uncluttering your room, and watching less TV become acts of justice and kindness, part of a life of following and imitating Christ, and a way to make room for God in our lives and in the world around us.

Other books tell the Passion narrative for young readers; this unique book integrates themes of hospitality and self-giving that echo Jesus' ministry, Jesus' entire life. Make Room invites children to wonder about the story, to encounter Lent with all their senses, and to experience activities in Lent as part of a life of discipleship.

This book features a global, historical analysis of the changes and continuities in one of society's basic functions: seeking to protect itself from disease.

Hygiene offers an important lens for major aspects of world and comparative history. The volume explores the ways different regions and major religions approached hygiene both before modern times and through the present with the more recent uses of germ theory. Topics in "premodern" hygiene include toilet practices, remarkably varied views about bathing, and different levels of commitment to investments in hygiene infrastructure. The "sanitary revolution" of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries forms a major dividing line in the book, including the variations introduced by developments like colonialism or communism and various forms of resistance to "modern" hygiene. The book links current, often bitter, debates about hygiene, around practices such as masking, both to the larger history and to recent issues like COVID-19.

Hygiene in World History is an accessible overview aimed at undergraduate and non-specialist listeners interested in world history, public health, and the history of health and disease.
