A son’s lessons from his single mother—a twenty five year old widow who took control of her life, defied expectations and raised him into a manhood of his own—from the author of the acclaimed The Accidental Life.
As a child, Terry McDonell imagined epic stories about his father, a fighter pilot who died in World War II. But, as he discovers in this dazzling memoir, the real hero in his life was his mother, Irma, who moved with him to California hoping for a new life and raised him through difficult times.
Like most headstrong boys growing up in mid-century America, McDonell took his mother for granted, never giving her life much thought. He was bright, cocky, and determined to make his own way, separate from her and from his complicated roots. But as he matured, built a career, married, divorced, remarried, and raised his own sons, McDonell came to see that Irma had lived her life in a way that allowed him to discover what he wanted his own life to be. The person he was would be forever tied to Irma’s courage and wisdom and love. From his recollections—a series of colorful, deeply personal, sometimes funny, stunningly composed vignettes—an intriguing and poignant portrait emerges.
Irma is the story of a formidable woman who built the life she wanted as she raised her son to be the kind of man and father he had longed for but never knew.

This is small copy of the introduction of the book: Welcome to the remarkable journey through the life and times of Jan Hus, a name that resonates through the annals of history as a symbol of courage, conviction, and religious reform. In this captivating biography, we delve deep into the extraordinary life of Jan Hus, a Czech theologian, philosopher, and the first church reformer.
Our journey begins in the heart of Bohemia, in the small village of Husinec, where Jan Hus was born around the year 1369. Little did the world know that this unassuming child would grow up to challenge the mighty Catholic Church and ignite a movement that would forever alter the course of European history.
As we progress through these pages, we will unravel the story of Hus's early education and his academic pursuits at the University of Prague. Here, in the hallowed halls of learning, he laid the foundation for his future endeavors, setting the stage for his role as a master of arts in 1396. But it was his appointment as a university preacher in 1401 that truly marked the inception of his remarkable journey. The Bethlehem Chapel in Prague became the pulpit from which Hus would not only disseminate religious teachings but also nurture the seeds of reform.

Orson Welles, born in 1915 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, emerged as a multifaceted force in the realms of radio and cinema. His early foray into the arts began in his teenage years, and by 1938, he achieved nationwide recognition for his radio adaptation of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds." This broadcast, presented as a series of news bulletins about a Martian invasion, caused widespread panic and showcased Welles' ability to captivate audiences through innovative storytelling.

Welles' transition to film was marked by the groundbreaking "Citizen Kane" in 1941. In this masterpiece, he played a pivotal role as co-writer, director, producer, and actor. Although it faced challenges initially, "Citizen Kane" has since garnered acclaim for its narrative innovation and technical achievements. This film not only solidified Welles' position in cinema but also left an indelible mark on the history of filmmaking.

Despite early successes, Welles encountered difficulties in Hollywood, struggling to secure funding and facing interference with some of his projects. His subsequent films, such as "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942), "Touch of Evil" (1958), and "Chimes at Midnight" (1965), showcased his creative prowess but also reflected the challenges he faced in the industry.

Welles' contributions extended beyond filmmaking; he excelled as an actor, featuring prominently in films like "The Third Man" (1949) and "Compulsion" (1959). His performances, coupled with his distinctive voice, added layers to his artistic legacy.

As he navigated the complexities of the film industry, Welles remained active, taking on diverse roles in projects like "The Trial" (1962) and "A Man for All Seasons" (1966). His resilience and willingness to challenge conventional norms continued to define his career.
