Sinopsis

Thucydides' "The History of the Peloponnesian War" is a groundbreaking historical account that meticulously chronicles the protracted conflict between Athens and Sparta from 431 to 404 BCE. Utilizing a rigorous approach to source material, Thucydides crafts a narrative that transcends mere chronicles, emphasizing the complexities of power, politics, and human nature. His analytical style, characterized by a profound inquiry into the motives of statesmen and the unpredictability of war, marks a departure from mythological interpretations of history, situating this work within the burgeoning field of political realism. This text not only serves as a historical document but also acts as a philosophical treatise on the ethics of power and governance during a tumultuous period in ancient Greece. Thucydides, an Athenian general and contemporary of the war, brings an intimate understanding of the political climate that shaped the conflict. His own experiences as a soldier and exile likely informed his impartial stance, striving to provide an objective perspective amidst the passions of war. The interplay between personal observation and analytical rigor solidifies his reputation as one of the earliest historians, laying the groundwork for future historical inquiry. For readers seeking a profound exploration of the dynamics of war, power, and human behavior, Thucydides' work remains essential. Its themes resonate through the ages, illuminating not only the events of the Peloponnesian War but also the enduring nature of political struggles. This timeless classic invites you to contemplate the cyclical patterns of history and the lessons they impart.

From the author of Searching for George Gordon Meade, a study of how troops from Maine aided the Union Army’s victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and his 20th Maine regiment made a legendary stand on Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. But Maine’s role in the battle includes much more than that. Soldiers from the Pine Tree State contributed mightily during the three days of fighting. Pious general Oliver Otis Howard secured the high ground of Cemetery Ridge for the Union on the first day. Adelbert Ames—the stern taskmaster who had transformed the 20th Maine into a fighting regiment—commanded a brigade and then a division at Gettysburg. The 17th Maine fought ably in the confused and bloody action in the Wheatfield; a sea captain turned artilleryman named Freeman McGilvery cobbled together a defensive line that proved decisive on July 2; and the 19th Maine helped stop Pickett’s Charge during the battle’s climax. Maine soldiers had fought and died for two bloody years even before they reached Gettysburg. They had fallen on battlefields in Virginia and Maryland. They had died in front of Richmond, in the Shenandoah Valley, on the bloody fields of Antietam, in the Slaughter Pen at Fredericksburg, and in the tangled Wilderness around Chancellorsville. And the survivors kept fighting, even as they followed Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania. In Maine Roads to Gettysburg, author Tom Huntington tells their stories. By the mid-19th century, other European powers became interested not only in the exploration of Africa but the exploitation of it, especially once the German Empire unified after the Franco-Prussian War. This began a rush, spearheaded mainly by European commercial interests in the form of chartered companies, to penetrate the African interior and woo its leadership with guns, trinkets and alcohol, and having thus obtained their marks or seals upon spurious treaties, begin establishing boundaries of future European colonies. The ease with which this was achieved was due to the fact that, at that point, traditional African leadership was disunited, and the people had just staggered back from centuries of concussion inflicted by the slave trade. Thus, to usurp authority, to intimidate an already broken society, and to play one leader against the other was a diplomatic task so simple, much of Africa would come under European influence in a short time.
Of course, there were exceptions to this rule, and for almost a century, the British in West Africa were faced with a powerful and stubborn African opponent: the Ashanti Empire. The Ashanti were formed by alliance and the conquest of the Akan people in the rainforest zone between the West African coast and the Sahel country to the north.
The Ashanti fought the British in five wars over the nineteenth century, and they were the only West African people inflicting more than one defeat on the British. War in tropical West Africa was different from most of the rest of the world. The prevalence of endemic diseases like malaria typically killed half of the Europeans posted there per year; it was called “The White Man’s Grave” for a reason. A second factor was the presence of the tsetse fly that carried a disease able to kill horses quickly. Military expeditions were left to move entirely on foot - there were no carts, no wagons, no pack animals, and no cavalry.
