Sinopsis

One of Thorne Smith’s most popular books and made into a film. Topper is about a respectable banker called Cosmo Topper, married to a depressingly staid wife Mary, and his misadventures with a couple of ghosts, Marion and George Kerby, who introduce him to other ghosts. He is romantically attracted to Marion, who at one point tries to kill him so that they can always be together. Unusually, Mary is treated sympathetically—she does not like what she has become and tries to change.

North and South by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell: "North and South" follows the journey of Margaret Hale, a young woman who relocates from rural southern England to the industrialized northern town of Milton. As Margaret grapples with the stark contrasts between the two regions and the social issues arising from the industrial revolution, she becomes entangled with the enigmatic mill owner, John Thornton. The novel delves into the complexities of class struggle, workers' rights, and the clash between traditional values and the modern world. Elizabeth Gaskell's insightful portrayal of industrial life and her nuanced exploration of romance and social issues make "North and South" a compelling and thought-provoking work of Victorian fiction.
Elizabeth Gaskell, an English novelist, is known for her compassionate portrayals of Victorian social issues and her insightful examination of the human condition. Her works, such as "North and South," "Cranford," and "Wives and Daughters," explored the impact of industrialization on society and offered a nuanced understanding of class and gender dynamics during the 19th century.

Originally published as a series of short stories in Sketch magazine, this tale of international intrigue and espionage begins when a visitor stumbles into detective Hercule Poirot's bedroom. In the final moments before his death, he tells Poirot of the crime cartel known only as the Big Four. What follows is Hercule Poirot's biggest case yet, taking him and his sidekick Arthur Hastings on the trail of the Big Four before their plans to take control of the world unfold. Note: The Big Four contains characterization and thematic elements representative of prejudiced beliefs, particularly Sinophobia and Orientalism. While these views were never legitimate nor equitable, they were unfortunately commonplace at the time of writing and publication. Rather than glossing over this painful dimension of literary history, this audiobook edition references the text as it was originally published so that it may be included when taking into consideration the overall impact of Agatha Christie's body of work. The beliefs and views present in this book do not reflect that of the publisher's.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume we explore and enjoy the stories of authors who attended one of the great seats of learning. Amongst their storied number are M R James, Hugh Walpole, William Makepeace Thackeray and a host of others.
