Sinopse

"The History of Chemistry" spans a period from very old times to the modern era. Since several millennia BC, civilizations were using technologies that would eventually form the basis of the various branches of chemistry. Chemistry was preceded by its protoscience, alchemy, which is an intuitive but non-scientific approach to understanding the constituents of matter and their interactions. It was unsuccessful in explaining the nature of matter and its transformations, but, by performing experiments and recording the results, alchemists set the stage for modern chemistry. While both alchemy and chemistry are concerned with matter and its transformations, the crucial difference was given by the scientific method that chemists employed in their work. Chemistry is considered to have become an established science with the work of Antoine Lavoisier, who developed a law of conservation of mass that demanded careful measurement and quantitative observations of chemical phenomena. The object of this work is to present a comprehensive overview of the progress of chemistry, from its first rude and modest beginnings till it has reached its modern state of importance as one of the leading sciences.

Even bad code can function. But if code isn't clean, it can bring a development organization to its knees. Every year, countless hours and significant resources are lost because of poorly written code. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Noted software expert Robert C. Martin presents a revolutionary paradigm with Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship. Martin has teamed up with his colleagues from Object Mentor to distill their best agile practice of cleaning code "on the fly" into a book that will instill within you the values of a software craftsman and make you a better programmer-but only if you work at it.

Clean Code is divided into three parts.
    - The first 13 chapters, fully contained in the audio, describes the principles, patterns, and practices of writing clean code.
    - The second part, chapters 14 to 16, consists of several case studies of increasing complexity and is included in a pdf that comes with your purchase. Each case study is an exercise in cleaning up code-of transforming a code base that has some problems into one that is sound and efficient. You'll be reading code-lots of code. And you will be challenged to think about what's right about that code, and what's wrong with it.
    - The third part, chapter 17, is provided both in the audio and the pdf. It is the payoff: a single chapter containing a list of heuristics and "smells" gathered while creating the case studies. The result is a knowledge base that describes the way we think when we write, read, and clean code.

Listeners will come away from Clean Code understanding:
    - How to tell the difference between good and bad code
    - How to write good code and how to transform bad code into good code
    - How to create good names, good functions, good objects, and good classes
    - How to format code for maximum readability
    - How to implement complete error handling without obscuring code logic
    - How to unit test and practice test-driven development

This book is a must for any developer, software engineer, project manager, team lead, or systems analyst with an interest in producing better code.

    Code IT Primary Programming Series
Basic computer coding is now among the most important skills a child can have for their future. There are many programming languages designed specifically for children to begin their studies, but the Scratch programming language, already recognised in schools around the world, is widely considered as the ideal place to begin programming in early education.
The highly successful Code-It series is a comprehensive guide to teaching Scratch to children in a classroom setting. It is designed for the UK-based KS2 curriculum but can easily be used to supplement other programming courses for children between the ages of 7 and 11.
There are four pupil workbooks designed to work in conjunction with the Code-It teacher handbook. They provide structure and resources for the children, including optional homework activities to extend to learning outside the classroom.
Workbook 4 explains how to think, program and debug exciting programming projects such as Times Tables Game, Perimeter, Clock, Cartesian Coordinates, Translation, Enlargement & Rotation, Primary Games Maker, Tilt Switch and Chat Bot. It also outlines how to use analytical computational thinking skills of algorithm design, algorithm evaluation, decomposition and generalisation; extend resilience and problem solving through the computational doing skills of converting algorithm into code and debugging; develop pupils' knowledge of sequence, repetition, selection and variable use; and program Lego models using Lego Wedo and Scratch.

The essential guide to differential diagnoses
Appreciation of the differential diagnosis for a particular symptom or sign has been a pillar of the practise of general medicine for generations of doctors.
Keeping a broad differential in mind when approaching the new patient is often key to avoid pitfalls of tunnel vision in management. Equally, the importance of the differential diagnosis in undergraduate and postgraduate examinations cannot be understated.
This book contains a series of lists of differential diagnoses for general medical presentations. We hope it will be of use for doctors wishing to refresh their memory with a quick reference guide, students of undergraduate medicine as well as postgraduate doctors in preparation for Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) examinations.
The best way to navigate the book is to identify the symptom or clinical feature required using the contents pages but the lists can be read in sequence for general readers.

    The Fourth Education Revolution...

Sir Anthony Seldon, the prominent political biographer and leading educationalist, addresses one of the high-stakes issues that will influence our future: the role of artificial intelligence and its impact on education.
The use of AI promises an altogether new way of educating, offering learners from all backgrounds widespread access to personalised tuition and digital educational materials from across the world. Educational institutions across the world have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and many have migrated, at least temporarily, to online platforms. The debate about how to deliver knowledge has never been more relevant.
Many countries have an excellent education system with their schools and universities – excellent, but tailored to the twentieth century. The mass teaching methods of the third revolution era have failed to conquer enduring problems of inequity and lack of individualised learning. AI is disrupting the way we live, work and interact with the environment, and we cannot stop it changing our schools and universities. But we have time – albeit not for long – to shape this revolution. It will not be a panacea, and if we are not quick, it will start to replace what makes us human – being creative, having beliefs, and loving others.
This book, presented in considerably updated and extended second edition, is a call to educators everywhere to open their eyes to what is coming. If we do so, then the future will be shaped by us for the common interests of humanity – but if we don’t, then it will be imposed, and we will all lose.
‘This book has the potential to impel change in our education system which is so badly in need of reform. The new “reconsidered” version in the wake of the COVID pandemic serves to emphasize even more strongly the role AI can play in education and how its use is being accelerated.’ Lord Clement-Jones CBE
