Sinopse

The Collected Works of Thomas Paine assembles the influential writings of one of America's foremost revolutionary thinkers and political activists. Spanning from his seminal pamphlets like "Common Sense" to his powerful treatise "The Rights of Man," this collection encapsulates Paine's fervent advocacy for liberty, democracy, and human rights. Stylistically, Paine employs clear and persuasive prose, strategically blending rhetoric and reason to galvanize public opinion during the tumultuous Revolutionary period. The book not only serves as a testament to Enlightenment ideals but also sheds light on the socio-political environment of late 18th-century America and Europe, influencing both contemporaries and future generations of thinkers and activists. Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was born in England and later emigrated to America, where he engaged vigorously in the political discourse of his time. His experiences as a propagandist and exile provided him a unique lens through which to critique government and champion individual rights. Paine's radical ideologies often placed him at odds with established authorities, making his works both valuable historical artifacts and powerful calls for social change. His life, punctuated by advocacy for republicanism and social equity, profoundly shaped modern democratic thought. For readers eager to explore the foundations of modern democracy and the rights of the individual, The Collected Works of Thomas Paine is an indispensable resource. This compilation not only offers a window into the ideological underpinnings of the American Revolution but also sparks critical reflection on contemporary issues of governance and civil liberties. Paine's passionate call for justice and equality remains as relevant today as it was in his time, making this collection essential reading for anyone interested in political philosophy and history.

Few scenes capture the American experience so eloquently as that of a lonely train chugging across the vastness of the Great Plains or snaking through tortuous high mountain passes. Although this vision was eclipsed for a time by the rise of air travel and trucking, railroads have enjoyed a rebirth in recent years as profitable freight carriers.A fascinating account of the rise, decline, and rebirth of railroads in the United States, John F. Stover’s American Railroads traces their history from the first lines that helped eastern seaports capture western markets to today’s newly revitalized industry. Stover describes the growth of the railroads’ monopoly, with the consequent need for state and federal regulations; relates the vital part played by the railroads during the Civil War and the two World Wars; and charts the railroads’ decline due to the advent of air travel and trucking during the 1950s.In two new chapters, Stover recounts the remarkable recovery of the railroads, along with other pivotal events of the industry’s recent history. During the 1960s declining passenger traffic and excessive federal regulation led to the federally-financed creation of Amtrak to revive passenger service and Conrail to provide freight service on bankrupt northeastern railroads. The real savior for the railroads, though, proved to be the Staggers Rail Act of 1980, which brought prosperity to rail freight carriers by substantially deregulating the industry. By 1995, renewed railroad freight traffic had reached nearly twice its former peak in 1944.Bringing both a seasoned eye and new insights to bear on one of the most American of industries, Stover has produced the definitive history of railroads in the United States.

July 3, 1981, was a pivotal night for the future of America's newest art form: hip hop. In New York's Harlem World Club, the Fantastic Romantic Five and the Cold Crush Brothers competed, with an unprecedented $1,000 on the line in a highly anticipated rap battle. The show drew hundreds of fans to settle a question that still dominates hip hop circles: Who's the best?

In Harlem World, journalist Jonathan Mael chronicles this fateful night of hip hop rivalry and shares a new look at how Harlem helped ignite a musical revolution. Since hip hop first emerged in New York in the early 1970s, artists sought to elevate this uniquely American musical genre by pushing the limits of record-playing techniques and lyricism. The two crews they assembled put on the best shows in a world where hip hop was still a strictly live art form.

The battle blew the roof off Harlem World that night, and bootlegged cassette tapes of the match-up sent aftershocks around the city as more fans listened to the legendary performances. Set in the New York of the 1970s and '80s, this book shares dozens of new, exclusive interviews and a treasure trove of previously unpublished archival material to tell the story of Cold Crush and Fantastic's rivalry, documenting one of the most important stories in hip hop history.

Between 1765 to 1791, the American Revolution was an ideological and political revolution in British America. In the American Revolutionary War (between 1775 to 1783), the Americans in the Thirteen Groups established sovereign countries that beat the British, getting independence from the British Crown and establishing the USA of America, the first modern-day constitutional liberal democracy.
The tax of American settlers by the British Parliament, a body in which they had no direct representation, provided contention. Before the 1760s, Britain's American groups kept a great degree of internal autonomy, which was managed by colonist legislatures on a regional level. The Stamp Act of 1765 enforced internal taxes on the groups, leading to colonist outrage and the development of the Stamp Act Congress, which united members from different provinces. Stress reduced after the British rescinded the Stamp Act but flared again when the Townshend Acts were passed in the year 1767. In the year 1768, the British federal government dispatched soldiers to Boston to stop discontent, which led to the Boston Massacre in the year 1770.
This is the book you would have to read to learn more about the American Revolution. Go ahead and continue.

Celebrating the beauty, power, and joy of female friendship
Wingman: a pilot who flies behind and outside the leader of a flying formation.
While researching her first book, That’s What She Said, Kimothy Joy discovered that the famous women she was profiling were not alone in their success. Each of them were propelled forward by a supporter—a wing woman—a sister, a mom, a best friend, a close confidant. The remarkable partnerships they shared were as multifaceted and complex as the individual women themselves.
Extraordinary Wing Women is Joy’s tribute to the importance of female camaraderie. This collection features 33 stories, each varying in length. Some will be familiar power duos—Oprah and Gayle, Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan, Venus and Serena Williams. Others are less known though just as inspiring such as the friendship of Julia Child and her editor Avis DeVoto, Junko Tabei and her all-women mountaineering team, and the Mariposas—the Mirabel sisters who overthrew a dictator in the Dominican Republic. The women featured are from across the world and from diverse periods of history. They are activists, artists, scientists, politicians, athletes, musicians, writers, and more—role models for every woman.
Joy dedicates Extraordinary Wing Women to the generations of women who are dismantling the myth that we must compete with one another to pursue and achieve our dreams. History and fiction have shown that we are stronger when we support one another. Joy hopes to inspire and teach us that we, too, have our own wings and can soar higher than ever before with our wing women beside us.
