Sinopsis

🌍 What if a perfect society could exist—free from greed, corruption, and inequality?

First published in 1516, Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most influential works of political philosophy and social commentary ever written. Presented as a dialogue, the book describes an imaginary island where justice, equality, and communal living replace the flaws of European society in More's time.

Blending satire and serious political thought, Utopia challenges readers to question the nature of government, property, religion, and morality. Is this vision a model for progress—or an impossible dream? For centuries, readers have debated whether More intended his work as an ideal to strive for or a critique of human folly.

🌟 Why this book matters:

A cornerstone of Western political thought.

The origin of the very word utopia.

A timeless reflection on power, society, and human aspiration.

Whether you are a student of philosophy, a lover of history, or simply curious about ideas that shaped the modern world, Utopia remains as provocative and relevant today as it was 500 years ago.

Gender is everywhere. Politicians argue over it, educational systems struggle to define it, and our friends, neighbors, and children explore it. More than ever before, young people are questioning their gender identities and redefining the role of gender in their lives. How should our society―and we as individuals (parents, teachers, friends)―respond?

In Gender Explained, Diane Ehrensaft, PhD, and Michelle Jurkiewicz, PsyD, separate medical fact from fear-mongering falsehoods and answer these questions: What should parents do when their child starts experiencing gender dysphoria? Which sports teams should transgender youth play on? How should schools teach young people about gender? And most important: What is gender-affirming care, and when should an individual have access to it?

With clear, expert guidance, this book is a safeguard against political vitriol, and it offers urgent protection for those among us who are transgender and/or nonbinary. Far more than an introduction to gender creativity, it is an invitation to develop compassion for everyone along the gender continuum.

"I'm here to put the internationals in order. I'm in charge here. Too many people showed up at the center and they had no business being there.” These are the words of an American instructor, met by Régis Le Sommier at the beginning of the war when all the media was minimizing the role of the United States in Ukraine.
Régis Le Sommier is the only war reporter to have gone to both sides of the front line with the Ukrainian and Russian armies for a year. He worked for Paris-Match for 30 years and received several awards for his journalism. Odessa, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Mariupol, Donetsk, Lugansk, Donbass and Bakhmut—are all war zones where the journalist has captured the truth of the reality on the ground. This is a raw book, a book from the level of the men, far from the hazy analyses of armchair specialists.

The 1984 State of the Union address, delivered January 25, 1984, praises “bipartisan cooperation” and says: “For a time we forgot the American dream isn't one of making government bigger; it's keeping faith with the mighty spirit of free people under God.” “Inflation has been beaten down from 12.4 to 3.2 percent…” “Real after-tax income increased 5 percent last year.” “We're seeing rededication to bedrock values of faith, family, work, neighborhood, peace, and freedom…”
Let us agree on goals to keep America free and secure. Our first goal is vigorous economic growth. “We can begin by limiting the size and scope of government.” The Grace Commission has 2500 recommendations to reduce wasteful spending. Also, the line-item veto which 43 of the 50 States, including California, grant their Governors is a powerful tool against wasteful spending.
Additional programs are proposed including a permanently manned space station. Tuition tax credits are recommended for parents who pay private school tuition to improve education by increasing competition among schools. School prayer and a law to protect unborn children from abortion are advocated, as are enterprise zones for high-unemployment areas.
Finally, peace is our great goal and highest aspiration. “The future is best decided by ballots, not bullets.” We will seek concerted action to combat terrorism, and work for “freer world trade, greater competition, and more open markets.” “A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”
Carl Sandburg said, “I see America in the crimson light of a rising sun fresh from the burning, creative hand of God… I see great days ahead for men and women of will and vision.''

How do we define patriotism in a diverse society? What divides us and what brings us together? Why do we feel uncomfortable celebrating our country’s history?
How to be a Patriot offers a new way of understanding our collective identity in a country wracked by division and brimming with markers of selfhood – faith, race, gender, age, sexuality.
Sunder Katwala himself grew up with some questions to work through. As a half-Indian, Irish Catholic child of the NHS, the chequered history of post-imperial Britain seemed very personal to him, but he realised that with that background he could hardly be anything but British, and proud of it too.
His timely and clear-eyed analysis seeks to navigate the many crises of this increasingly disunited kingdom: extremism and integration after 7/7; fear of immigration and the deep divides of Brexit; the resurgence of online racism; and the debate over our cultural heritage. Equipped with a nuanced understanding of the subject and a wealth of supporting data, he sets out to foster a more open and tolerant society: one that welcomes alternative ideas and cultures rather than shutting them out.
Ultimately, How to be a Patriot is a rousing story of lives lived together and shared values. Far from being divisive, it concludes, an inclusive and confident patriotism is a reminder that our differences need not define us.
Sunder Katwala's How to be a Patriot is a top non-fiction book that offers a unique perspective on nationalism and policy. It's a public commentary on the social science of our time, exploring discrimination and ideologies.

Who will defend Europe? The answer should be obvious: Europe should be able to defend itself. Yet, for decades, most of the continent enjoyed a defense holiday, outsourcing protection to the United States while banking an increasingly illusory 'peace dividend'. Now, after three decades of reducing armed forces and drawing down defense industries, Europe finds itself close to unprotected—while Russia is intent on continuing its war of expansion, and the United States is distracted and divided.

In this urgent, vital book, Keir Giles lays out the stark choices facing leaders and societies as they confront the return of war in Europe. He explains how the West's unwillingness to confront Russia has nurtured the threat, and that Putin's ambition puts the whole continent at risk. He assesses the role and deficiencies of NATO as a guarantor of hard security, and whether the European Union or coalitions of the willing can fill the gap. Above all, Giles emphasizes the need for new leadership in defense of the free world after the United States has stepped aside—and warns that the United Kingdom's brief moment of setting the pace for Europe has already been squandered.
