Sinopsis

Thomas More's "Utopia" is a profound exploration of political philosophy and social idealism, presenting a fictional dialogue that critiques contemporary European society of the early 16th century. The text, written in Latin and later translated into various languages, employs a satirical and allegorical literary style, interweaving humor, irony, and sharp socio-political analysis. More's narrative unfolds an imaginary island society, drawing contrasts with European norms regarding property, governance, and morality, thus prompting readers to reflect critically on issues like justice, freedom, and the human condition. Thomas More, a lawyer, statesman, and humanist, was deeply embedded in the tumultuous landscape of Renaissance England. His experiences in the court of Henry VIII and his commitment to Catholicism significantly shaped his perspectives on governance and ethics. These influences culminated in More's desire to envision an alternative society where reason, equity, and communal well-being triumphed over greed and corruption, making "Utopia" not merely a work of fiction but a compelling call to reform. Recommended for scholars, students, and general readers alike, "Utopia" challenges us to envision and engage with the fundamental structures of society. More's thought-provoking assertions continue to resonate, urging us to contemplate the balance between idealism and practicality in our pursuits of justice and equity in the modern world.

An illuminating history of the reform agenda in higher education.

For well over one hundred years, people have been attempting to make American colleges and universities more efficient and more accountable. Indeed, Ethan Ris argues in Other People’s Colleges, the reform impulse is baked into American higher education, the result of generations of elite reformers who have called for sweeping changes in the sector and raised existential questions about its sustainability. When that reform is beneficial, offering major rewards for minor changes, colleges and universities know how to assimilate it. When it is hostile, attacking autonomy or values, they know how to resist it. The result is a sector that has learned to accept top-down reform as part of its existence.

In the early twentieth century, the “academic engineers,” a cadre of elite, external reformers from foundations, businesses, and government, worked to reshape and reorganize the vast base of the higher education pyramid. Their reform efforts were largely directed at the lower tiers of higher education, but those efforts fell short, despite the wealth and power of their backers, leaving a legacy of successful resistance that affects every college and university in the United States. Today, another coalition of business leaders, philanthropists, and politicians is again demanding efficiency, accountability, and utility from American higher education. But, as Ris argues, top-down design is not destiny. Drawing on extensive and original archival research, Other People’s Colleges offers an account of higher education that sheds light on today’s reform agenda.

Years after her successful and impactful career at the CIA, Christina Hillsberg became enthralled with the stories of the trailblazing women who forged new paths within the Agency long before she began her career there in the aughts. These were women who sacrificed their personal lives, risked their safety, defied expectations, and boldly navigated the male-dominated spy organization.

Through exclusive interviews with current and former female CIA officers, many of whom have never spoken publicly, Agents of Change tells an enthralling and, at times, disturbing story set against the backdrop of the evolving women's movement. It was the 1960s, a "secretarial" era, when women first gained a foothold and pushed against the one-dimensional, pop-culture trope of the sexy Cold War Bond Girl. Underestimated but undaunted, they fought their way, decade-by-decade, through adversity to the top of the spy game.

Seamlessly weaving together the individual stories of these exceptional women, Hillsberg deftly tackles not just the fight for gender equality at the CIA, but the current dilemma the Agency faces when dealing with the culmination of a decades-long culture of sexual harassment and assault.

Anubis is among the most recognizable gods of ancient Egypt. Is Anubis a relic of the past, or is he actively venerated now? Author Charlie Larson, a longtime priest and devotee of Anubis, answers these questions and more. Portrayed as either a black jackal or as a jackal-headed man, Anubis is Egypt's original Lord of the Dead. Anubis's domain extends beyond death, however; he is also a guardian of children and travelers and a finder of lost things. He is as modern as he is ancient—appearing in comic books, video games, and in Neil Gaiman's book American Gods and its television adaptation.

Anubis was among the most significant gods of ancient Egypt. In modern times, Anubis has emerged as a sacred patron of mediums and occultists. It's widely believed that his image is among the two canines found on the tarot Moon card.

Long overshadowed, at least in books, by Egyptian goddesses such as Isis and Sekhmet, Larson's book focuses the spotlight squarely on the jackal-headed god. His book features history and mythology but is also a practical guide to working with Anubis now. It features devotional practices and modern worship that includes rituals, prayers/invocations, correspondences, altars, and epithets. The book leads the listener on a journey of exploration into all things Anubis, exploring his various facets.

In "Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals," Kant explores the ethical foundation of human actions. He argues for the supremacy of moral duty based on rational principles, emphasizing the intrinsic value of goodwill. Kant's deontological ethics asserts that individuals should act according to universalizable moral maxims, independent of consequences. The text delves into the concept of categorical imperatives and the autonomy of the moral law, shaping a profound philosophical framework for ethical decision-making. Read in English, unabridged.
