  What was happening elsewhere in the world when Robert the Bruce was outlawed and Mary Queen of Scots lost her head? When Genghis Khan was on the warpath and Ivan the Terrible was the Russian czar, what was happening in Scotland? Find the answers to these questions in 2,000 years of Scottish history presented alongside what was happening in the rest of the world.
  By placing events in Scotland in relation to those elsewhere, we can see what is different or distinctive about Scotland's experience. Simultaneously we can also see where movements in Scottish history were part of wider cultural or political change in Europe and beyond. John Knox's fiery sermons of the 1560s were connected into a wider Protestant Reformation, but they also represented a singularly Scottish version of a European phenomenon.
  Connecting Scotland's History also gives us a history of 'many Scotlands'. We see the hybrid nature of a country where multiple peoples have come together in a distinctively Scottish mixture. From the Gaels, Picts and Norse people to more recent influxes from England, Ireland, continental Europe and beyond, Scotland's history tells us of internal connections as well as connections between Scotland and the wider world.

  The first full history of the highly trained and ruthless civilian volunteers secretly trained across Britain to be deployed in the case of a German invasion.The narrative surrounding Britain’s anti-invasion forces has often centered on ‘Dad’s Army’-like characters running around with pitchforks, on unpreparedness and sense of inevitability of invasion and defeat. The truth, however, is very different.  Top-secret, highly trained and ruthless civilian volunteers were being recruited as early as the summer of 1940. Had the Germans attempted an invasion they would have been countered by saboteurs and guerrilla fighters emerging from secret bunkers, and monitored by swathes of spies and observers who would have passed details on via runners, wireless operators and ATS women in disguised bunkers.  Alongside these secret forces, the Home Guard were also setting up their own ‘guerrilla groups’, and SIS (MI6) were setting up post-occupation groups of civilians – including teenagers – to act as sabotage cells, wireless operators, and assassins had the Nazis taken control of the country.  The civilians involved in these groups understood the need for absolute secrecy and their commitment to keeping quiet meant that most went to their grave without ever telling anyone of their role, not even their closest family members. There has been no official and little public recognition of what these dedicated men and women were willing to do for their country in its hour of need, and after over 80 years of silence the time has come to highlight their remarkable role.

  This book concerns the religious impact of the Black Death. This plague devastated Europe in the fourteenth century. It examines the impact of the Black Death on the Catholic Church and the religious movements that arose in response to it. The conclusions drawn here are based on the research of both primary and secondary sources. The Church played a significant role during the Middle Ages because religion was an essential aspect of daily life for European Christians. When the Black Death struck Europe in 1347, the Church struggled to cope with the plague’s damaging consequences, and its reputation suffered as a result. This book concludes that the Black Death contributed to a decline in the confidence and faith of the Christian laity towards the Church and its leadership. The scope of this book focuses on the plague’s impact on the clergy, the rise of the flagellant movement, and the widespread Jewish persecutions that ensued in the wake of the epidemic. The Black Death was a pivotal event in the history of Western society, with profound cultural and demographic consequences. Its impact on the Church and religion within the medieval community justifies the study of this topic.

  Among the most significant water displacement phenomena in the Western world was Doggerland on the northern European continent. The notable inundation occurred in both a steady and eruptive fashion covering a vast stretch of former tundra, a land bridge between today’s British Isles and the European continent. The event brought about the modern English Channel and an expanded North Sea, and unlike the early supercontinents, the inundation of Doggerland took place after the appearance of people. Incrementally submerged since roughly 18,000 years ago as the climate warmed, the patch of sea between Britain and Europe is the subject of much recent scientific scrutiny. Several fields are participating in the inquiry as to how and why the inundation took place, and the nature of the peoples that settled there. This encompasses earliest man to Neanderthals and on through the Mesolithic prototype of the modern European.  
  	Wales is a whimsical country with a powerful, complex, myth-filled and oft disputed history. In 2004, geneticists working with geographers and archaeological colleagues undertook a “People of the British Isle” study. They sought out thousands of volunteers, all four of whose grandparents had been born in the same place, and they analyzed their genetic make-up. “Modern genetic analysis can read the patterns of variation in our complete set of DNA . . . that change subtly over time,” producing a genetic signature that reveals geographical origins. This provides a window into history and helps explain why Wales is so singular and self contained. (Settlers: Genetics, geography and the peopling of Britain N D). The results of this project confirmed that the Welsh are unique, despite the common belief that the term “Celtic” is an homogenous concept that can be used as an overall term that includes the Irish, the Welsh, the Scottish clans, and Cornwellians. “Celtic” is much more nuanced.

  In this WWII memoir, a British rifleman turned fighter pilot recounts his frontline experiences, both on ground and in the skies. Ron Pottinger served his country through the entirety of the Second World War. Assigned to the infantry in 1939, he soon became a rifleman in the Royal Fusiliers. Later, he was able to transfer to the Royal Air Force, where he began flying the 7.5-ton Hawker Typhoon.   In A Soldier in the Cockpit, Pottinger recounts dozens of dangerous ground attack missions, flying over occupied Europe through bad weather, heavy flak, and enemy fighters. Though he was eventually shot down and taken prisoner, he survived to tell his tale.
