This is a place you never hear about in America...
A unique American collection of poetry, Whaling Town explores the rough work of self-realization and the roots that anchor us to the unsteady ground of our past.
Facing a turning point in his life, David Parker Allen began traversing the landscape of the United States, researching and writing music and assembling the bones of a collection of poetry. His journey led him through a personal family immigrant story in New Bedford, Massachusetts—the whaling town Melville made famous—to small communities across the Mississippi Delta and deep South, Gulf Coast, and Mountain West, as well as the streets of Chicago and New York. Jumping from rural America to urban hubs and back, Whaling Town tells a story of place and people in a gritty world that’s both in and out of our control.
With clear-eyed observations and gentle musicality, Allen takes stock of the burden of our collective history and looks directly into passing storms that we each must face alone. When the skies clear, how do we come to terms with self and our place in this world, and what do we build from the wreckage?

Based on the historical record of Bessie’s ‘confession’ to witchcraft in sixteenth-century Scotland, the episodic structure of the play shows the many characters and events that supposedly made up the catalogue of her crimes, but which in fact testify to her innocence and goodness. Bessie Dunlop, the Witch o Dalry introduces students to different levels and varieties of Scots and English and contains teaching notes, suggestions for classroom activities, and questions for discussion or writing. The original version of Bessie Dunlop, the Witch o Dalry was written by John Hodgart and Martin Clarke in 1977. Hodgart rewrote the play for an EIS Drama competition before revising it again for Hodder and Staunton who published it as a school text in 1995. This 2021 shorter edition is the fourth version of the play.

Is your retirement plan dying in the climate wars? Are you getting on with things in the meantime? In Life expectancy begins to fall, Tom Sastry asks how we normalise an apocalypse, taking us on a tour of bad coping strategies, unwelcome epiphanies, and striking reminders of what we still have.
Part-elegy and part-satire, these poems do not show you what to do in a crisis, nor do they promote the cliches of positive thinking that tell you how to be a good worker, an effective activist or a spiritual person. Instead, quietly and persuasively, Sastry develops a subtle meditation on hope. The poetry shows us as we mostly are, lost in the enormity of it all and busy with other things. Explore a world where 'pessimism is complicated by love' and optimism is found hiding in moments where 'nothing happens, in the most lavish way'.
