Beschreibung

In "On Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts," Thomas de Quincey ventures into a provocative exploration of aesthetics and morality against the backdrop of early 19th-century Britain. This remarkable essay employs a distinctive blend of dark humor and philosophical inquiry, challenging the reader to contemplate murder not just as an act of violence but as an artistic phenomenon worthy of scrutiny and appreciation. De Quincey's lyrical prose and intricate rhetorical style enhance the literary merit of the text, positioning it within the canon of Gothic literature and early criminal psychology, as he dissects the motivations of both murderer and audience in a meticulously structured narrative that balances grotesque fascination with moral complexity. De Quincey, a notable figure of the Romantic movement, drew upon his own tumultuous experiences and opium use, navigating the realms of addiction and intellectual exploration. His introspective writings often reflect upon darker aspects of human nature, which profoundly informed his unique perspective on violence and beauty. This work encapsulates not only his intellectual milieu but also the broader cultural currents of a society grappling with the implications of violence captured in popular media and societal narratives. "On Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts" is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the intersection of art and ethics, as well as the philosophical underpinnings of violence in literature. De Quincey's nuanced argumentation invites readers to appreciate the aesthetic dimensions of even the darkest human actions, making this text a compelling and unsettling exploration of art's moral territory.

Ollie, who used to hate weekends because they meant no school, was crying on the way to school almost every day. Sure, there were the slings and arrows of bullies and bad teachers, but, maybe worse, Ollie, a funny, anxious, smart kid, was gravely underchallenged and also struggling with identity and how to live totally as themselves. Ollie begged to switch to a new school with "kids like me," and so they made the change.

Raising Ollie is dad Tom Rademacher's story (really, many stories) of that eventful and sometimes painful school year, parenting Ollie and relearning every day what it means to be a father and teacher. As Ollie—who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns—flourishes in their new school, Rademacher is making an eye-opening adjustment to a new school of his own, one that's whiter and more suburban than anywhere he has previously taught, with a history of racial tension that he tries to address and navigate.

While Ollie is learning to finally feel comfortable at school, Rademacher increasingly sees how his own educational struggles, anxieties, and childhood upbringing are reflected in his teaching, writing, and parenting, as well as in Ollie's experience. He shows us how raising a kid changes everything—and how much raising a kid like Ollie can teach us about who we are and what we're doing in the world.

"Power, Pleasure, and Pain: A Study of Abuse Through Time" delves into the dark history of how sexual violence and abuse have been intertwined with power structures throughout history. From the libertine excesses of figures like the Marquis de Sade to the scandals of modern-day predators like Harvey Weinstein and R. Kelly, this book provides a compelling examination of how those in power have used their positions to exploit and control others.
Spanning centuries, this critical exploration looks at the societal, cultural, and institutional failures that have enabled abusers to operate with impunity. Sean Dupree uses both historical and contemporary examples to highlight the systemic nature of sexual violence, tracing its roots back to philosophical and psychological underpinnings of dominance and submission.
Whether dissecting the abuse of power in religious institutions, entertainment, or the workplace, this study leaves no stone unturned. "Power, Pleasure, and Pain" is a powerful reminder that, despite the progress made by movements like #MeToo, much work remains to be done in holding abusers accountable and supporting survivors of sexual violence.

Without consciousness there is nothing. Have you ever wondered why and how the world around you came to exist, and whether there might be an afterlife experience awaiting you after our physical bodies die? Might there actually be a God and a heaven of some sort? The hypothesis presented in this book is that our seemingly physical universe of matter and energy is a virtual simulation which is thought into existence by a universal consciousness which we call God.

A reason for a universal consciousness to do such a thing could be to experience and evolve itself through the free will actions of its offspring. This would entail thinking into existence a virtual universe so as to interact with such a universe and each other. Literally everything is consciousness in action, resulting in a gigantic cosmic simulation. We and other creatures are offspring of this God consciousness.

The Miracle of Our Universe explores the forefront of science and spirituality research, including: Are near-death experiences real? What is the Zero-Point Field? What kind of being could God be? Is there some place that God could have come from? How does the Big Bang figure into this? Is there an afterlife and what could it be like? What is the purpose of life? Is consciousness all there is? Is the Universe a virtual reality? Why is Hell impossible?

ALCHEMY, the secret art of the land of Khem, is one of the two oldest sciences known to the world. The other is astrology. The beginnings of both extend back into the obscurity of prehistoric times. According to the earliest records extant, alchemy and astrology were considered as divinely revealed to man so that by their aid he might regain his lost estate. According to old legends preserved by the Rabbins, the angel at the gate of Eden instructed Adam in the mysteries of Qabbalah and of alchemy, promising that when the human race had thoroughly mastered the secret wisdom concealed within these inspired arts, the curse of the forbidden fruit would be removed and man might again enter into the Garden of the Lord. As man took upon himself "coats of skins" (physical bodies) at the time of his fall, so these sacred sciences were brought by him into the lower worlds incarnated in dense vehicles, through which their spiritual transcendental natures could no longer manifest themselves. Therefore they were considered as being dead or lost.
The earthly body of alchemy is chemistry, for chemists do not realize that half of The Book of Torah is forever concealed behind the veil of Isis (see the Tarot), and that so long as they study only material elements they can at best discover but half of the mystery. Astrology has crystallized into astronomy, whose votaries ridicule the dreams of ancient seers and sages, deriding their symbols as meaningless products of superstition. Nevertheless, the intelligentsia of the modern world can never pass behind the veil which divides the seen from the unseen except in the way appointed--the Mysteries.
