Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682) was a physician and writer whose pursuits in both health and literature melded in extraordinary ways. His academic background, rooted in the study of medicine and philosophy, likely served as a catalyst for his exploration of existential themes within his works. Living during a transformative period in England, Browne's writing not only reflects the advancements in science but also grapples with the tensions between faith and reason, encapsulating the spirit of Renaissance humanism. "The Most Influential Works by Sir Thomas Browne" is an essential read for anyone interested in the development of literary and philosophical thought. The relationship between trauma and mental health is becoming better recognized, but survivors and professionals alike remain confused about how best to understand and treat it. In Reclaim, through a series of case studies and expert analysis, Dr. Ahona Guha explores complex traumas, how survivors can recover and heal, and the nature of those who abuse. She shines a light on the "difficult" trauma victims that society often ignores, and tackles vital questions such as, "Why are psychological abuse and coercive control so difficult to spot?" and "Why do some people harm others, and how do we protect ourselves from them?"

As a clinical and forensic psychologist, Dr. Guha has had extensive experience in working with those who perpetrate harm—including stalkers, sex offenders, violent offenders, and those who threaten, bully, and harass—and she has a deep understanding of the psychological and social factors that cause people to abuse others. In turn, her clinical work in the trauma treatment field has led her to recognize the enormous impacts of complex trauma, and the failures of systems when working with those who have been victimized.

By emphasizing compassion above all, Dr. Guha calls for us to become better informed about perpetrators and the needs of victims, so we might reclaim a safer, healthier society for everyone.

The Whigs and the Know Nothings...

It was in the wake of the election of Andrew Jackson that the Whigs emerged as opponents to the Jacksonian Democrats during a period of American history known as the Second Party System (1828-1854). Initially, the conflict was rooted not only in different visions for the United States – the Whigs believed in a strong central bank and federally funded infrastructure projects (known as “internal improvements”) – but also in opposition to one man: Andrew Jackson. When it first formed, the Democratic Party coalesced around Jackson, and his beliefs and actions became Democratic Party dogma, which left the diverse group of people who opposed Jackson to become the Whigs.
The problem with this arrangement is that while the Whigs scored some notable successes as an opposition party, they found governing more difficult. The two Whigs elected president, William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, died in office, raising to the presidency their respective vice-presidents, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore. Neither man succeeded in uniting the Whig Party behind him (a gargantuan task, to be sure), and neither was ever elected president in his own right. The increasing rancor over slavery is what finally killed the Whig Party.
In the wake of contemporary debates over immigration, the “Know-Nothings” have been regularly cited as an example of how dangerous nativist attitudes can become and, indeed, have proven to be in America’s history. Several columnists, for instance, have striven to make comparisons between the Know-Nothings of antebellum America and the country’s recent immigration policies, helping in part to generate modern interest in a political party that many Americans have heard of but tend to know little about. The Know-Nothing movement can actually be tied to a number of violent episodes and ethnically charged riots that occurred during the late 1850s.

This smart and thought-provoking memoir, history, and cultural critique about the turmoil and complexity of female friendship is read by the author."Smith's gift for journalistic narrative...will make a lot of listeners hear it in a more personal way" —AudioFile on The Book of Human EmotionsOur culture today is inundated with narratives about the strength of female friendship, whether through images of girl power, BFFs, or work wives. Yet cultural historian Tiffany Watt Smith has always found her own life much messier. She has had dramatic friend breakups, friendships that felt like too much or not enough, friendships that drifted into silence, and friendships built on convenience rather than a meeting of minds. And there are older cultural scripts to contend with: the competitive rival, the jealous backstabber, the underminer, the fair-weather friend. We have all been bad friends. It’s impossible to be a perfect one; as Watt Smith points out, women’s friendships have long been magnified, scrutinized, praised, and admonished, creating a legacy of impossible ideals. In Bad Friend, Watt Smith reflects on her own experience and thoroughly mines the rich cultural history of female friendship to look for a new paradigm that might encompass the struggles along with the joy.A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books.
